My First Ripe Tomato of 2009
I harvested my first ripe tomato on Saturday morning (actually I harvested 2, I took one to my mom). It’s one of my Tumbling Tom Tomatoes that’s planted in a hanging basket. I thought my Sub-Arctic tomato would be my first ripe one, but they’re all still green. The plants are loaded with tomatoes though, they should be ripening any day now.
I haven’t eaten it yet. I think I’m going to cut it in half, salt it and share it with Mr Chiots. I’m looking forward to many more tomatoes this summer!
Any ripe tomatoes from your gardens yet?

How cute! Congratulations! I had thought I would be right there with you with my first ripe tomato, but New England got hit with 50 days of rain and no sunshine.

You’re going to share the First Tomato? You’re a better person than I am. I don’t share the First Tomato. Not that I’ve had it yet . . . still a couple of weeks away, at least.

I will not be too far behind you with our first ripe tomato for 2009. The Stupice plant has a fruit that is sized up and is obviously changing internal color – should go ripe in a hurry and fairly soon. My prediction is by July 18th. Right behind it is a full size Legend fruit that appears to be getting ready to start ripening. I surely hope so. Once some fruit ripens it creates a cascade effect in the ripening process. I think it is the ethylene gas emitted by the ripe fruit that triggers the other fruits to hurry up and ripen.

I got a 7-10 cherry tomatoes off one of my plants on July 3rd. Though they are all tiny, more the size of peas than cherries. I guess I will have to note that for next year.

I just harvested the last of my ripe tomatoes this weekend! I also brought in several green ones that don’t look like they will ripen. We (Dallas, Texas) had temps above 100 degrees for a week straight which pretty much stops the ripening process. I had at least a hundred blooms that didn’t set fruit before the temperatures got too high. sigh. But I’m starting my fall plants and so hopefully will get more tomatoes in a couple of months.

We don’t have any ripe tomatoes yet. A few little green ones on a handful of plants, but nothing red yet.

Don’t salt the first one! Savory the delicious sweetness of that cherry tomato sans salt. Those cherry tomatoes are as sweet as they come. Mix them with basil and put them on some garlic toast for bruschetta, yum! I picked about 20 cherry tomatoes this morning I’m still waiting on a good slicing tomato.

That sounds great! I’m a huge fan of tomatoes with olive oil & pepper on toast and sometimes a bit of romano cheese.

Just cherries, but some of the Principe Borghese are redding up. I can’t wait for the onslaught! The Early Girls are almost tennis ball size.
