My First ‘Ronde de Nice’ Squash

July 15th, 2009

My first ‘Ronde de Nice’ squash was ready to harvest on Sunday!
Ronde_de_Nice_Squash_on_Plant
I’ve had a few female flowers open before this one, but they weren’t pollinated fully so the fruits didn’t grow this big. This one I hand pollinated (I need Chicago Mike to send me some squash bees).
Harvesting_squash
This squash weighed in at 9 ounces. I picked it small because it’s the perfect size for Mr Chiots and I to eat in one meal. I love squash fixed in so many ways: sauteed, steamed with olive oil and pepper, battered & fried, au gratin, in omelets, in lasagna, and many other ways. I have 4 squash plants so pretty soon we’ll be eating squash every day I think, and it will really help my garden harvest totals for the Garden Harvest Challenge!

What’s your favorite summer squash recipe?

We have a Ronde de Nice plant too, and one squash is ALMOST big enough to pick. I like it grilled.

Well besides zucchini bread, which I adore, I make a Mexican dish with rice, beans, zucchini, tomatoes and some other things that escape me now. Curry is always nice too. I’m not the biggest fan of summer squash though I like it. I tend to put it into things as opposed to featuring it as the star.

I really do not have too much trouble keeping up with my summer squash production. We really enjoy it and I never plant more than four plants. My favorite recipe for summer squash is Italian Vegetable Stir-Fry. Here’s a link to the recipe if you are interested.

That is a particularly nice looking squash and the shape is fun to look at. I am having to resort to hand pollination again this year. The bees are just not working my garden at the critical times that I have squash plants blooming.

What is in the Italian seasoning herb mix? Since I grow so many of my own herbs, I would rather use fresh if possible. But the recipe sounds tasty and easy.

The blend of dried herbs includes thyme, rosemary, oregano, and basil. I use fresh herbs when in season, but I also used home dried and a store bought (Costco) dried italian blend. Whichever way you go – it will be good!

I’m not sure why my honeybees don’t find my squash blossoms, perhaps they haven’t found them yet. I do see them by my cucumber blossoms.

Thanks for listing the ways you like to use the squash. I never know what I’d use squash for (except acorn squash with butter and brown sugar) and my husband doesn’t eat his veggies. Maybe I can start sneaking some into dinner :-) The colors on it are quite pretty.

Mr Chiot’s used to be kind of veg averted. I used to put chopped spinach and broccoli stems and grated zucchini in everything (like spaghetti sauce, lasagna, soups etc).

Grilled with onions…in zuchini/applesauce bread…pickled (hot and spicy) and in cookies! I love summer squash, I’ve got 6 plants this year, it is the winter squash I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to keep up with! Kim
