Keep Your Fuchsia Blooming
I have a fuchsia on my side porch by one of my hummingbird feeders. It’s quite lovely and the hummingbirds love it.
In order to keep it blooming all summer long I’ve been cutting off the fruits when they form. The fruits are those little green nubs that appear when a blossom dries up, you can see one in front of the flower in this photo.
If you keep these cut off the plant will continue blooming, if you don’t they’ll quit blooming.
Do you have any great tips for keeping certain plants in tip top shape?
I have a cacti plant that offers lovely red blooms throughout the year. The blooms fall off after about 1 week, and then reappear about 5 weeks later. Lovely. It does best on absolute regularity – watering once a week (Sunday at 11am). For a while I was watering on Sunday, but at different times of the day. Once I switched to 11am waterings *always* the blooms were also more regular, and lasted longer. Very interesting.

Your fuchsia is beautiful!
Unfortunately, we can’t grow them because of our intensely hot summers….sigh. The only thing we grow that takes much care (other than top-dressing with compost and watering) are our roses. We do have to cut back the hips in order to get flowers and feed them in the spring (and fall … if I remember to do it). For the most part our plant choices are based on how little we have to fuss with them. We love the phrase “grows like a weed” around here :)

This is my first year with a fuchsia. My mom always has them, so I decided to try one this year. I’m considering overwintering it in the basement. I have it on the side porch in the shade all day so it stays a little cooler. It’s getting hot here so it may suffer.

My fushia is fading in the heat! So I just brought it inside and watered it and it seems to have perked up. Gonna try to keep it as a houseplant – do you think it will work? I found out that fuschia berries are edible but some taste better than others – I’l be more diligent about removing them to get more blooms like you suggest.
