Harvesting Beans

Remember those pole beans I planted in June? I’m harvesting them now. The Dragon Tongue beans are quite lovely and the Kentucky Wonder Pole beans are quite tasty.
In the winter I like my green beans with bacon, onions, and garlic cooked till their soft, but in the summer fresh beans need only a little steaming and a drizzle of olive oil.

What’s your favorite way to enjoy green beans?

    Roasted, with olive oil and garlic. Yum. Thankfully, the stupid rabbit that was eating all of my green beans has either found something else to nibble on or (more likely) my hit dogs took him out, so my green beans have staged a comeback. It doesn’t compensate for the loss of the tomatoes, but at least it’s something.

    As simply as possible is often my answer. I love them just raw. But quick roasts (or this year, ventures into grilling) is good for bringing out the flavors, and its fun to do a dish of mixed beans so that the contrasts become more clear. Cranberry beans and flat broad beans are current favs.

    I just steam them then eat them. Nothing added. In the winter I use them in soups, but in the summer they are just plain.

    Oh they look delicious! I like mine sprinkled with feta and a little bit of homemade olive oil & balsamic vinegar dressing or a lemon one! Yummy!

    We have been harvesting beans by the bucket fulls! Our favorite way to eat them is lightly steamed, then sauteed in some olive oil with some minced garlic and a dah of salt.

    Next year I’m hoping to grow sugar snap peas too!

    I’m growing dragon tongues this year, such an excellent tasting bean. My poles have just started to produce as well. It has been a long wait this year. I like my beans cooked with a little snap with butter and S&P. I like fresh beans about as much a sweet corn.

    Most of the time we like them just steamed until tender – then served with some butter and a sprinkle of salt. They go into all sorts of other dishes though – stir fries, soups, casseroles, etc. Such a versatile vegetable.
