Throw Open the Windows

October 27th, 2009

Yesterday we had a nice warm sunny day, it was in the mid 60’s. When we have weather this warm I always open all the windows to get some fresh air in the house.

The cats are in heaven on days like today, and so am I. One of the things I really miss in winter is open windows and being able to hear the sounds of nature.

What are you going to miss this winter?

Our cats love window surfing too! I am already missing the leaves on the trees. They seem like they are bare forever in the winter…

I’ll echo the missing of open windows. I’ll also miss the growing plants and seeing green leaves on the trees.

yup, that’s a third on the open windows. but i am going to try to keep the bedroom window cracked a bit. in this cabin, though, it can get pretty cool at night, so… my fortitude .. we shall see!! now that i have the dog, it might be easier to open that window for a one-dog-night. when i had my cats it was six-cat-nights, the only time of year they were friendly..

    In the winter I miss:

    – walking outside in my bare feet to go get the morning newspaper
    – dashing outside in the morning to pick some fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries (what ever is in season) to top my morning cereal
    – having daylight in the evenings long enough to do something meaningful outside after work

I’m going to miss my tomatoes warm off the vine. Actually, I already miss them. I have some green ones put away to slowly ripen, but it’s not the same.

I am looking forward to my fireplace and cozy sweaters though!

Wintertime is when I CAN open the windows. So it is something I always look forward to. A cool fresh breeze clearing the stuffiness out of the house. And definitely cats sitting on the windowsills. I have fairly wide windowsills and there is always an argument with the cats when I try to sit potted plants there. They claim ALL windowsills as theirs. So each sill must have enough space for the cat and the flowerpot or the flowerpot ends up on the floor.

What I miss in the winter is swimming. I start every summer day with laps in the pool; a refreshing way to get my exercise. In the winter I have to force myself to a consistent workout.

Unless it falls into the teens though I still open my windows for a time each day and unless the wind chill is getting frightening I have to spend time outside each day too. I will miss the sun. I have seasonal affective disorder and a light box with vitamin D supplements only help so much. Honestly I am a little worried about it as my baby is due December 4th and baby blues + winter blues might not be that great of a combination.

I want to say though, even though there are things I will miss, I love freshly fallen snow and the hoarfrosts that make the trees look like someone coated them with icing. I love being able to see my breath and like I did when I was a child I still enjoy breathing on the window and drawing shapes. There are things I will miss yes, but there are things only available in Winter that make the longing not so bad.

I had to chuckle at your definition of ‘warm’. Yesterday it was in the 80’s here, but today we are expecting a 19 degree drop. So while you all are throwing open the windows, we’re cranking up the heater and putting on our sweaters :)

We LOVE winter and just about everything that goes with it….the only thing I miss about summer are fresh tomatoes!

Opening windows is absolutely one of the things I miss the most. We haven’t been able to do that very much this fall which has been doubly sad. One of the few times we’ve been able to our cats were beside themselves in ecstasy. It’s their first fall, though, and the leaves blowing off the trees and roof (and their reaction) was highly amusing!
