Sending out Some Love

February 11th, 2010

Valentine’s is a funny holiday. Mr Chiots thinks it’s all a setup by card companies to get business after Christmas. We don’t celebrate, no cards, flowers, candy or jewelry is exchanged here at Chiot’s Run. I may make a batch of chocolate covered cherries for us to enjoy. Even though we don’t celebrate, I love Valentine’s day stuff. I don’t know what it is about all the hearts and cards and cheesy stuff that I love, it’s just so FUN! I’ve always wanted to send out Valentine’s to friends, but have never really gotten around to it. This year however, I decided it was time.

I decided to make cards for a few friends that live far away and I don’t get to see often enough. I love the cheesiness of the Valentine’s we used to pass out as kids, so I decided to make mine as cheesy as possible. I had a few popcorn boxes sitting around leftover from a project for our business. I printed out a few things on my computer, then I got out my scissors and tape. I spent an evening being crafty, something I haven’t done in a long time. It was fun. I’m sure they’ll bring a smile to the faces of those that receive them.

I even found a piece of popcorn clip art for the envelopes, which I printed up. At the post office I found these vintage TV show stamps that fit the theme perfectly. I sealed them with a heart sticker to bring the cheese factor up even more. Can’t wait for my friends to find these in their mailboxes! There’s still time to send out a few Valentine’s of your own!

Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?

I’ve never been a big valentine’s day person, for many of the same reasons as Mr. Chiots. Plus, it seems that a lot of people (though not all, of course) go overboard on the whole thing, making it on the one hand a set formality on what to do, and on the other hand an effort to top whatever was done last year, or match what the other person did for them last year.

Yet, it, like New Year cards, can surely be a nice way to let people know they are being thought about. Maybe that’s a way to look at the day – an opportunity to show that someone is in your thoughts, but doing it in a simple, re-connecting way.

We’re going to, but not in the dinner and roses sense. We’re going to go kayaking down in the mangroves and bring a picnic lunch. I’m not a big fan of the Hallmark aspect of the holiday, but it is nice to take a day to just be together.

Valentine’s Day was always my favorite card giving holiday and I used to make one every year. As much as I love having the internet at my finger tips it’s definitely made it seem like more of a hassle to put together a physical card and send it out which is really too bad because these are the types of things I think people like to keep….. the one you made is so awesome!! I think you’ve inspired me to at least take a Valentine’s Day photo and email it around.

We don’t celebrate it as a special day with dinner out or presents, but I do buy myself flowers [pink tulips last week] and I get out heart themed items because I decorate the house seasonally. I also have a lot of heart jewelry which I wear the entire month of February! hehe I love hearts in general. I think your Valentine’s cards are too cute! I also usually send my mom something for Valentine’s Day because we don’t live near each other. This year it was a scented soap and lotion from a delightful internet entreprenuer who hand makes all her products. In the depth of winter, it’s just nice to do anything fun or different.

Those are some very fun cards. They are sure to bring a smile to the face of anyone opening that.
We started the one and only yearly tradition when we dating: cheese fondue for Valentine’s day. It’s nice to avoid the crowds but still enjoy a romantic and relaxing evening with my lovely. It’s a meal that can’t be rushed which is half the fun

In the UK it is a holiday for lovers, and a few married couples do flowers etc. When I was living in North America, I couldn’t believe how widespread the holiday was – cards for parents, friends, kids etc that is just not done here!

    Lovely cards!!

Valentines day is just an excuse to buy chocolate for each other and restock our personal chocolate stashes which by now (almost two months after Christmas) are completely depleted! Never gotten into it though in the sense of gift giving (outside of our traditional swapping of boxes of chocolates!), cards, or dinners out etc. Just another day for us really.

I’m of the same mind as you. Every day should be Love Day (as we call it around here), but oh my goodness these are adorable!!! I think I’d have to imagine lots of Love Days just to use these up. The more cheese the better. :D

What a fun, sweet idea! I love V-day. Helping the kids pick out and address their cards is always fun. Finding semi-healthy candy, not so much. I’m making whole wheat brownies for us that day. :) Melissa

We sort of celebrate but not in a huge stressful way. We usually give each other a little something silly most times. I am with Mr C though…I think it is a marketing scheme more than a holiday!

I’m Canadian (though live in the US now) and was raised that Valentines is for lovers (and children giving cards to classmates) so the whole *thing* around Valentine’s day in the US is strange to me. Thankfully my husband agrees, so we do just that. Our oldest (kindergarten) is giving cards to classmates and I’ll give a little something to them and to the hubby. We’ve adopted the Japanese idea of Valentine’s Day and White Day – on V-day I give hubby handmade chocolates (and my boys) and on White Day (March 14th) hubby will give me something. It’s nice to spread the romance over a longer time period.

I’m making heart-shaped cookies for kids today, and that’s as good as it gets here. I generally loathe Valentine’s day.

Love the cards! At most what I’d like to do is find a few ideas for Valentine’s Day cards that we can make with what we already have on hand. I was also pondering making some window stars to give as gifts from the kids to family members. We’ll see what I end up getting done, though.

I’m going to cook dinner on Sunday (it’ll be a late one), but we’ll have some red beets (!), and something for protein maybe some ice cream with blueberries from the freezer. She’s getting a morel hunting knife (oh, no! I just thought maybe I should have saved that for later and bought a mushroom ID book first lest she kill both of us with the wrong thing!)… And I’ll do the dishes. That’s not all, but I’m not telling about the rest. My point is that, there won’t be any card or flowers – I grow flowers she gets ’em all the time. If I do a card, I’ll make it. I think the idea of HONORING one’s lover is a lovely thing to do. But it ought not just be once a year and it ought not be driven by commerce. She gets special treatment as often as I can do it; I kind of LIKE Valentine’s day because, like Mother’s Day or Thanksgiving or any holiday, if we remember WHY it’s a holiday, that remembering is the value of calling it a holiday. In the commercialized world, it’s a day off from work and a reason to spend money. And stress about it. Instead of feeling love and loved.
