Time Machine: What I was Doing 1 Year Ago
One of things I love about blogging that is encourages me to take tons of photos. I average at least 20 photos a day and some days more than 200 (thank goodness for digital). The best part of taking so many photos is that I have a pictorial journal of everything I’ve been doing for the past 10 years. Digital photos have a time stamp that tells you exactly what date and time the photo was taken – I love this feature. I was wondering yesterday what I was doing on March 15 of last year, so I opened up my photo program, here’s what I found:
I finished off a batch of maple syrup in the morning and put some peas in water to soak for planting the next day. These are the peas that the deer ate, so I never even got to eat any of these.
It was a beautiful spring day so we celebrated by going on a picnic with friends at a local trail. We enjoyed a good lunch and a short hike. The perfect way to enjoy a beautiful spring day besides!
After hiking we came home to get some work done in the garden. I carried 5 trays of seedlings up to enjoy the warm day on the front porch: 3 trays of onions, 1 tray of nice lettuce, and one tray of broccoli & cabbage. This year I barely have some onions that germinated this past week.
I also sifted some compost to amend the soil in the cold frame for a planting lettuce seedlings and beet seeds. This past week I did sow some spinach seeds in the cold frame after amending it with some compost.
These lovely lettuces were planted in the cold frame in the afternoon, they’re only a week or two away from harvesting small leaves for a salad. I don’t even have lettuce yet, except for a few mache plants that overwintered. These are the lettuce seeds that I started to choose the winner of the Freedom Seed contest.
I also started beet seeds in the cold frame. This past Friday and I started spinach in the cold frame.
I also took a ton of photos of the beautiful sunset we enjoyed that evening, what a perfect ending to a perfect day!
I have 165 photos from March 15, 2009. I do need to delete some of them, but I definitely have a great photo journal of what I was doing on this day last year, and what the cats were doing.
Do you remember what you were doing on March 15 last year?

Having just started my blog in December 2009 I was not taking as many photos a year ago, or writing about what I was doing. One of the things I thought about when beginning by blog though, is the opportunity I will have to look back and see what we were up to, what the weather was doing, how things may have changed. I like that, and thank goodness for digital cameras. I do worry about filling up my computer with photos though.

Oh yes, I have over 20,000 on my computer. They all get backup up as well, wouldn’t want to lose any of them. I periodically go through and delete ones I don’t need any more and try to stay on top of things that way.

Well you made me look to see what was going on last year here LOL!
Looks like I did not have much going on but the trees were budding and I enjoyed spotting the first Robins. Sunrises and sunsets were among my pictures too.

I don’t blog every day, but it’s nice to have a general idea of what I’ve been doing the past years that I have blogged. This time last year I was planning where to put my garden beds in the big empty area near our house. We were considering redoing our driveway and moving a hill, but haven’t yet and we have other, higher priorities right now. Since the garden is in, this year, we’re much more active outside. I grew up in Ontario so I’m not used to spring sticking around as early as it does here, and almost no cold snaps. It’s bizarre!

I was just rereading my paper gardening journal, and I was doing just about the same thing here — making room in the winter plants for summer ones, starting seeds indoors. It’s good to have records.

This is definitely what I love the most about blogs and digital photos. So many memories!

I remember that picnic and hike. We started wearing fleece and ended up with no jackets on. It was a really sunny day, hot in the sun almost, and we had to turn around and walk with the sun at our backs since I forgot my sunscreen. It was that bright! Good times…

I do indeed go back and look at the digital images from prioor years. I do not tend to take photos of everything I do all day – instead my pictures are largely concentrated to my garden and related activities or special events/projects. However, it has the same effect of capturing the essence of what was happening in my life at that time and the world surrounding me.
