Friday Favorite: A Little Unusual

February 25th, 2011

I’m a very eclectic person, I have hobbies and interests that span a wide area. Most people know that I love to garden, cook, sew and all kinds of things like that. But I also have a few things that you might find unusal that I enjoy. For one I love Jay-Z music, I know not what you’d expect from me. Another one of the things I love is playing a computer game called Diablo 2 with Mr Chiots.

We used to play the original Diablo when it came out years ago. We were super excited when Diablo II came out and we’ve been playing it over and over again while patiently waiting for 11 YEARS now for Diablo III to come out. We’re not sure if it ever will. You may find it funny that in the game I’m always a Barbarian.

I was badly in need of a new mouse pad, so Mr Chiots got me this awesome Diablo III Barbarian mousepad. What kind of character was on my previous mousepad? Hello Kitty of course, another one of my loves.

What’s a hobby or interest do you have that people might be surprised about?

I’ve been reading your site for a while and would not have pegged you as a video gamer. Diablo III is in development, you can look at trailers for the game here: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/. Walmart also has it available for pre-order.

I know, but they’ve been saying that (we’ve watched screen shots) for like 6-7 years. I’ll believe when I see it on my computer!

I love that you love Jay-Z. On a related note, I love to dance. Not trained dance, like ballet or something, just dance. I used to go to clubs when I was younger and single; now I dance around the living room with Cubby. Though I have to edit my music selection a little more with him around. :-)

It depends on the people – who is surprised by what.

Simple living people are sometimes surprised I’m into computer games too. I play World of Warcraft sometimes (obsessively for a few months at a time, then not for years) but generally prefer strategy/simulation games – I like games where I’m planning economies or public transport systems, or before I moved house and got a garden & chickens myself, I like playing Harvest Moon DS – which is about growing vegetables and keeping chickens!

People in my life who know I really like playing computer games (and that I’m really quite shy) are often surprised that I’m involved a local drama group – including teaching two groups of often overly-enthusiastic teenagers.

And the drama people & kids are quite surprised whenever I mention gardening, making things/getting my hands dirty, and keep chickens!

I play WOW too. I attribute WoW with keeping me sane and helping me cope with an extreme life event. where many might drink or fall apart….I leveled a Night Elf to 70 (now 80) and made some of my first new friends in decades.

Diablo – When I was in college my Dad and I played Diablo. We would swap characters back and forth. It was our thing when we lived on opposite sides of the state. I haven’t thought of that in years. Thanks for bringing back the memory!

My husband and I play Diablo II as well. We have been putting off buying a new desktop until Diablo III comes out, so you can imagine how old it is by now, haha. I usually play as the sorceress. I’m sure that you already have the expansion pack, but if you don’t, that could hold you off until the third game :)

Oh my, that is an old computer then. We do have the expansion pack and love it, we build up characters, then start over building up new ones. I’m always a barbarian though.

Like Louisa, it depends on who I’m talking to.

People who know I love punk are surprised I also love traditional country western. The homebrewing club is surprised I knit. Always keep ’em guessing!

Haha. I’m just like you. My husband always tells me that if I quit my job and stay home, I’ll never be bored because I have too many hobbies. Actually, he got me a PS3 for my birthday last year. He never plays video games, so I’m by myself. Lucky you Mr Chiots plays games.

I think people are most surprised that I make all our soap/cleaning/moisturizing products – though not because it’s unexpected from *me*, but that it’s not something people tend to think about as something you can do yourself.

I’m not a gamer, but hubby is and I take a lot of interest and enjoyment from watching him play RPG’s – such that he chooses games that I’ll be interested in and we tend to buy together.

    OH. MY. GOODNESS.
You know this Friday Favorite post is currently my favorite from you! I would have NEVER pinned you as a Diablo player…
[Coming from a person who has been playing on ze’ computer playing MUDS since she was… five? Yeah…]
But yes, this makes me extra excited, and now I can share my excitement for DIII with you too! Blizzard supposedly shared information that they are hoping for a 4th Quarter 2011 release – but Blizzard is known for delaying games indefinitely. I really, really cannot wait though – Have you seen the FEMALE barbarian?! Gogo Valkyries!

Ahem. Now that I’ve ranted for the day. Back to work now, I suppose…

I know, Mr Chiots and I were super excited about it a few years ago and finally gave up hope. We’ll but it when it comes out, but aren’t holding our breath that it will be any time soon. The trailers always look fun though. And a female barbarian – right up my alley – wonder if I can find an awesome Bone Snap Maul for her in the new game.

How very aprospos, as I have an article about Blizzard open in another tab. I join you in awaiting the DIII, though I fear, as I remember how much of my life was consumed by DII… For now, though, StarCraft 2 will do for me! Happy Friday!

Up until 6 years ago, I was a avid, hardcore, MMORPG gamer. Ultima Online, the a few other others, ending with Star Wars Galaxies. I was a purple twi’lek named S’ita; an entertainer/dancer type.
    Wow, seems so long ago.

Oddly, I’m also a fan of Diablo II. You might also like Torchlight (and it’s available for PC and Mac, which is awesome).

I enjoy playing video games on the Wii myself, and my favorite PC game ever is Sid Meier’s Civilization.

Joseph and I used to be big gamers too — World of Warcraft was our game of choice. We started playing at release and played on and off for 5 years. We even started and ran a full time, 25 man raiding guild for a period of time. We finally broke away from our “addiction” with news of Katherine’s pending arrival. We just couldn’t justify the 15+ hours per week on the game. I still kind of miss playing, but I know it’s so much easier to keep the temptation out than to regulate my time on it.

    Thanks for sharing!

This brought back some memories for me. Diablo I was the first game I played with my husband.
A couple years back my husband and I went to Blizzcon and tested out Diablo III, it was a lot of fun!

Just found you website today while I was looking for pictures of painted beehives! I have a very similar lifestyle as yourself and live in NE too! What organic sustainable living girl does not love the hip hop and video gaming? I think we have the privilege to love of the best of the past and present.

Hi, I enjoyed reading your post very much. I live in the country, have gardens, chickens and grow roses and keep horses. I have played a lot of Diablo in the past, many years ago, this reminded me of all the fun I had with my son who was really into it as well. I work as a gardener but love the computers….. I think you and your readers may be interested in my blog. Keeping Chickens
