Spotting Wildflowers

February 29th, 2012

When we’re traveling we like to take the road less traveled, meaning no the four land highway. As a result we often see beautiful things. We drive through quaint little towns and admire people’s personal gardens as we drive by. Taking the smaller two lane roads also affords us the luxury of spotting wildflowers. Here’s a collection of wildflowers I spotted and photographed during out Tiny Trailer Trip out West this past August. Here’s a slide show of the flowers I spotted along the way. Do you ever take the small side roads instead of the highways when you’re traveling?

I’m so grateful I have working eyes when I see your photographs. You are truly talented.
We prefer the small town route as well. Thanks for taking us on your travels!

love to do that. Even when we have to take those longer trips to a supply store. When we lived in Cincy, We would take the 2 lane roads around Columbus up to Richard’s parents. Beautiful drive.

Absolutely! If there’s a scenic route, we’ll find it… sometimes unintentionally, but we’ll find it nonetheless.

We took a trip out west many years ago, and did pretty much the same thing with wildflowers, and have some neat pictures. It’s fun to find things that don’t grow near where you live.

I love side roads, but will admit there are times I just want to “get there” Right now the wild flowers are really blooming just south of in my area. Beautiful blue bonnets and many other beautiful yellow kinds. We have had some nice winter rains so far this year. It is beautiful to see the color popping out. My backyard is still a bit behind. I should start seeing color in the next few weeks. Your photos are wonderful!

Susy, I am liking the non interstate two lane highways more and more. It seems that everyone that is in hurry will be taking the Interstate while those that like to travel a more relaxed drive take the two lane roads. I kind of like to break the monotony of driving by coming to a small town every so often. You are definitely not making it any easier for me to contain my spring time urges to dig and plant. The spring season will start gearing up in a couple more weeks but the real gardening season with begin about the middle of May.

I’m glad you could get away from things for a time and enjoy nature at its finest. Have a great day.

Beautiful pics! Taking the road less traveled often has many rewards :)

One of my favorite backyard spots is full of wild flowers. We have wild black eyed susans, zinnia, cone flowers, milkweed, and lots of other native beauties that bring butterflies & other pollinators to the neighborhood.

Girl, that sunflower pic is to die for… That is gorgeous frame worth art..

Man, I miss my wildflowers.. Texas has wildflowers like no other and I miss them probably more than anything besides my family. ;) I was supposed to take a driving Wildflower trip/tour thru Texas this year but unfortunately Im not going to be able to. Next year I guess. Planning on picking up my daughter & granddaughter & hitting the road for a couple or 5 days. ;)

Unfortunately, these days, if Im traveling in a car, Im traveling with another who 1.doesnt like to travel, 2. doesnt like to mosey, & 3. has no interest in going off the beaten path, unless we’re on the motorcycle, and that physically beats me up after very long so its not very enjoyable for me. Maybe we’ll get a touring bike one of these days, that’ll change.
Usually, these days, if we’re traveling, we’re doing most of it by air.

When I was a kid, we traveled a lot, both by air & car, and back then mostly all there was is the scenic routes.. lol. No super highway systems so we got to “know” the Southwest pretty well.

When I was in South Texas in Oct of last year, my brother was working & living about an hour off the main highway we were traveling so we met up somewhere in the middle for dinner, in a town that we used to travel thru when we were kids. We also had family friends who had lived there back then, so it was really nice to get a look at the town.
I took the old way back all the way to San Antonio and it was really neat to see all the old towns & the road I’d not seen in 30 years.
Yes, I enjoy it very much, but dont get much opportunity.

How funny, I watched the movie Big Fish today – in which he takes the “road less travelled”. Wherever possible I prefer to explore and will always take the back roads vs the highway, you miss so much if you by-pass the small places. Thanks for sharing your beautifully composed photos.
