Roasted Chickpeas

Last night we went to a holiday party.  We were supposed to take a snack of some sort.  Knowing there’d be the usual snack items already there, I decided to make roasted chickpeas. Mine were dried beans that I soaked overnight then cooked. I tossed them with coconut oil and roasted them in a 400 oven for about 40 minutes (or until most of them are crispy). I then removed them from the oven, poured them in a bowl and tossed them with ghee, honey and various spices like smoked paprika and cinnamon. Back into the oven they went for 5-10 minutes. They should all end up crispy and delicious, a little like pretzels.

Sometimes I also love to add smoke chipotle to add some nice heat, but usually avoid that when I’m taking them elsewhere as most folks don’t enjoy that level of spiciness. One of these days I’m going to add mustard powder instead of paprika because I think honey mustard ones would be heavenly!

    We don’t go to parties too much (or at all) so I don’t get to share any of my treats that I make.

    But your post reminds me of making lentils the same way. So yummy. I have yet to try the chick peas in honey. But that is on my list for this upcoming week.

    One of my favorite snacks to bring to a party is warm rosemary bar nuts from Union Square Cafe cookbook in NYC. Its just assorted raw nuts toasted until warm and fragrant, then tossed with melted butter ,brown sugar,cayenne pepper, and fresh chopped rosemary. It smells and tastes wonderful and is always a big hit. I am definitely going to try your roasted chick peas. They look delicious.

    I used to make roasted chickpeas and haven’t done it in years. Thanks for the reminder! Yours sound much more tasty than my sorta plain ones were, though. I’ll try your recipe soon – I have a jar of dried chickpeas in the pantry right now.

    The only holiday party we go to is our family party, and I have brought the same snack food for the past 10 years and cannot deviate (there would be a riot). I make those little sausage/cheese/biscuit balls, they eat them like popcorn. One year I skipped them and made something else, and everyone made sad pouty faces at me periodically through the entire day. I got the hint.

    One snack we like to share is, bacon wrapped dates stuffed with almonds. Or, not so crazy, our own smoked salmon.

    Susy, I am not so much a party animal. My snacks if I do go are pretty much guy stuff. Chips and dips not home made but store bought. I know not very creative. That’s one of the reasons I hang out on your blog. You spark my creativity. Now that the Christmas rush is over for me, maybe I’ll be able to work in a creative thing or two.

    Usually, I take Robert’s Corn Dip and corn chips. Now with even more information about the harm of eating GMOs, I would use organic corn. This year, my best friend is having a Christmas Pot Luck to which I’m bringing half a turkey roasted.

    They were tasty…not your run of the mill party snacks. It was nice to have something new and different to try. I would love to try the honey mustard version some time :)
