The other morning I went out to collect eggs and found this ginormous beast. I know exactly who laid it, our oldest lady. She’s five or six years old, I’m not exactly sure which. That’s the beauty of having older hens in your flock, you fewer eggs from them, but they’re usually bigger.
I wish I had grabbed a pullet egg so you could see them side-by-side. I also should have weighed it as well, but I didn’t. It was cracked right into Tara’s bowl atop kefir and she gobbled it down.
Do you ever find jumbo eggs in your coop or in the eggs you get from a local farm?

WOW! That is huge! Are you certain it’s not a turkey egg??

Susy, in all my years of egg gathering I found many double yolk eggs but only one triple yolk. It was a massive egg like the one you are holding. That had to be the worst day of that hen’s egg laying life. My egg gathering days have been over for many decades but I still have fond memories of trying to out wit the protective old hens. They didn’t want to give up their eggs without some resistance. Not all were like that but there was always a couple that would not give up the eggs without a stand off. It was a character building challenge for a young lad of only 8 or 9 years old.
Have a great egg collecting day.

Out of curiosity, is there a taste difference? Is that why you gave that particular egg to the dog? Or it just happened to be the one you grabbed for the dog today?

Got one a couple of years ago that large but longer!! Was like 4x normal. It had another egg complete with shell inside, then egg white & the outer shell. Freaky!

Yes, from time to time we do get a ginormous egg. I never know which hen has laid it but its always a surprise, at least twice plus the size of a “normal” egg. Tara had a delicious treat, lucky dog.

Character and education are always so expensive.

i have at least one chicken that lays a huge egg a few times a week. It won’t even fit into a jumbo egg carton.
