Freezing Avocados

January 28th, 2015

A few weeks ago I ordered another box of avocados from Freckleman Farm. It’s a small farm, they only have 16 avocado trees. The variety is ‘Fuerte’ and they’re FANTASTIC!!!!!

I was really amazed at the quality of fruit. They were perfectly ripe and flavorful about 5 days after I received my box. They stayed fresh in my cool pantry for a week and a half. After eating them fresh on salads for the past 10 days, I decided it was time to freeze the rest of them so they wouldn’t go bad.

So I whipped them up with lime zest and juice (1/2 lime per avocado). Into small jars they went and I’ll enjoy the guacamole when I during the seasons when I can’t get fresh avocados.

I’m ordering another big box of these avocados because they’re so good. It’s difficult to find good avocados at the local stores around here, it seems they’re always bruised up and they go bad so quickly. It’s so nice to live in a time when you can order directly from small farms and get great produce!

Do you like avocados? What’s your favorite way to eat them?

Susy, I don’t have a big freezer, just the one that is part of the fridge. So, am wondering if that wonderful-looking whipped avocado would do as well in ziplock freezer bags which would be easier to store if they were laying down and stacked. What do you think?

It would work very well in freezer bags.

Susy, I do like Avocadoes but have only eaten them in guacamole. I have seen them served in sliced up in salads but never ate them like that. My daughter always orders Spinach Guacamole dip appetizer from a national name restaurant when we eat there. That’s wonderfully good. I really don’t ever think about buying or using Avocadoes. Another thing I need to put on the list to explore eating more.

    Have a great Avocado day.

    Susy,
I ordered Meyer lemons from the Lemon ladies and I loved them!! Can not wait to try my limoncello that I used the lemons for.
I see an order for avocados in my near future. Never froze them but I will try it.

So when you thaw will this brown if not eaten quickly? Saw on cnn the other day that avocado production is using too much water in California and they will have to cut back on production. Gasp! Will they not grow in Florida? CNN said ones from central America are controlled by drug cartels?!?!

It doesn’t brown very quickly at all. I find these particular avocados to brown less quickly than others. I usually freeze it in containers that we eat up within a day or two of thawing.

I also have a dwarf avocado as a houseplant, it’s supposed to start producing avocados when it reaches 3 feet tall – I’ll keep you posted.

I love them in a tomato, avocado and buffalo mozzarella salad.

But my favorite way is on lightly toasted German style sourdough bread with a little bit of olive oil drizzled on the bread, then avocado slices, pepper, salt and a bit of balsamico vinegar.

Have you ever seen the Good Eats episode where Alton Brown basically starts using Avocado in place of butter and shortening in recipes just to prove they have a high fat content? I believe he even made green buttercream frosting.

I wonder what you cold bake them into and freeze. Wouldn’t neon-green muffins or banana bread be pretty cool? :-)

I haven’t, I have heard of avocado ice cream though and keep thinking of making it. Next box I get might be the time to try it.

    Susy,
I forgot to ask earlier could you share the recipe for freezing avocados? This will be my first attempt :)
    Thanks

I love to eat avocados on toast with a squeeze of lemon and salt and pepper. I also like them in guacamole, on a burger, in a salad . . . I had no idea you could freeze them and am now tempted to buy a box. Thanks for the new ideas!

Love guacamole, bacon, avacado, tomato sandwich, topping eggs, or avacado, plain, all by itself.

I never knew you could freeze avacado. Thanks for the tip. I learn so much from you!

I’m intrigued by the idea of freezing avocadoes. Now that I’m back in Texas they’re pretty much available all the time and for cheap, so I don’t think I’ll have to go there!

I wish they grew in my zone but you have to head a few hundred miles south to escape the freezing temperatures.

Yum.. I love avocados.. I have all of my life.. My favorite way to eat avocados is to just cut on in half.. add some lemon or lime juice and salt & pepper and stick a spoon in it.. Yum! Mom always put them in our salad and I do that sometimes now too.. Love guacamole as well..
Sometimes I also smash some with ranch dressing for a Green Godess dressing..
I freeze them as well when I find a good bunch for a good price.

I just ordered a box of 20! I let them know you’d mentioned them in your blog – hopefully they’ll give you a discount for advertising for them! I LOVE good avocados, and am really looking forward to their arrival!
