Friday Favorite: This Knife
I used to used my kitchen knives to harvest in the garden, then I heard someone recommend this Victorinox Serrated Harvest Knife and I decided to buy one. It quickly became one of my favorite tools. The red handle makes it easy to spot if you drop it, even in thick plants. The $9.95 price makes it very inexpensive compared to my kitchen knife, when I bought mine, many years ago, it was only $4, but now it comes with a nice sheath.
This little knife is also super sharp, it will cut through the toughest rhubarb stalks and it harvests asparagus like a dream. I’ve had mine for years and it’s just as sharp as when I got it. Overall, I’m super happy with this knife and highly recommend it!
Do you have a special knife you use for harvesting?

I have recycled knives with chipped points or other problems to garden work too. I did get to harvest a few asparagus this year (year 3) and let the rest grow out– however, I noticed 2 shoots coming up yesterday. Should I let them go or harvest?

I find a pair of kitchen shears to be the best tool for harvesting the vegetables that I grow- tomatoes lettuces kale squash bok choy and herbs.

Susy, my favorite knife was a knife which was a little bigger than yours and had a hook shaped end with a fork in the very tip. It was a serated cheese knife with a curved forked tip. Some how I have miss placed the knife or lost it in Terra Nova Gardens some where. I will run across it some day and will be excited to find it. In the mean time I really do need to replace it. A utility garden knife is a must have tool for sure. It could be in my tool shed some where. Yeah, the shed is that bad. I really must straighten it up and organized the tools in the shed. You are such an orgainized person that I bet you never have that problem. :-)
Have a great garden utility knife day.

Nope.. no knives for me… I snap my asparagus off when I harvest it as I do my rhubarb.. I just twist the stalk & it pops right off.. I do use kitchen sheers to harvest herbs but thats really about the only thing I do use in the yard/garden.

Oh.. last year I did use my Swiss Army knife to harvest my cabbages.. but other than that I really dont have any use for a knife in the garden.

Victoinox knives are the best. Serrated ones keep their edge and the others can be sharpened really well. And they are dishwasher proof!

I like to use my pruning shears .. I keep them sharp and get a nice cut. I paid a few dollars more than the knife that you mentioned, but I also use my shears to trim my raspberry and blackberry bushes. So I get decent use out of it.
I have never tried a knife on the asparagus. I might have to give it a whirl.
