Multiple Varieties

February 28th, 2017

Every year I get some of my seeds from Renee’s Garden Seeds, one of my favorite things about her seeds is that you can get multiple varieties in one packet.

Take for example the packs of radish and beet seeds, each packet has five different varieties. This is such a great thing for those of us that want to grow multiple varieties, but don’t want to spend the money to buy five different packs of seeds. I try to use up as many of my seeds as possible each year, buying seeds like this allows me to do just that.

What’s your favorite seed source?

I always buy mixed salad leaves and mixed oriental leaves – I only have a small space in which to grow things so it makes sense. I also used to mix the ends of seed packets up, things like beets, chards and climbing beans. Do you then save seeds from the individual varieties that you like?

I’m a fan of Hudson Valley Seed Company (formerly Hudson Valley Seed Library). http://hudsonvalleyseed.com/

They offer a wonderful selection of heirloom and other open-pollinated seed varieties, and grow many plants for seed harvest here in NY.

Susy, my favorite seed source has become the end of year discount at my daughter’s work. Hundreds of seed packs are on the block for either very cheap sale or dumpster. I normally purchase all the close out seed packs and store them for Spring planting. Tons of flowers and vegetable seeds are among the stash. Last year I purchased about 150 seed packs for about $10. The brand name is Burpee and they absolutely do well every year. It’s been quite a savings for me and gets me to try flowers and vegetables that I normally wouldn’t order or plant.

Have a great day starting seeds. Onions, cabbage, lettuce, and marigolds are under the grow lights.

In the Pacific Northwest, my favorite seed company is Territorial Seeds. Their catalog is full of information on culture, pests and diseases, harvest and storage, etc.

I buy almost all my seeds from Fedco here in Maine. They have an amazing variety of organic and heirloom seeds suited for our growing conditions, you can buy small packets, they are a co-op, they offer different varieties in one packet, they are inexpensive, their seed-sourcing is well-explained, their germination rate is phenomenal, and their catalog is a work of art. Love, love, love them.

I love the idea of mixed packs like this, but didn’t know they existed. My favorite source at the moment is Baker Creek. Honestly, I think I could spend hundreds there and still not have all the seeds I dream of though. I am definitely going to check out Renee’s.

Because of this blog, I ordered from Renee’s this year! Actually, I think I blacked out a little because I ordered a LOT from Renee’s, and didn’t remember it! I got the Butternut and Delicata Squash combo pack from Renee’s – can’t wait until I’m cracking into those!
