My Favorite Season

May 9th, 2017

Salads are one of my favorite meals, I can eat them every single day and never tire of them. I love that you can top lettuce with a wide variety of protein, fruit, and vegetables to have a different meal every day. In the spring, I plant enough seedlings so that I can harvest a leaf or two from each plant and have enough for at least a side salad for each of us at dinner.

That makes for a lot of lettuce plants, but they grow when nothing else needs garden space. As soon as the plants are growing more quickly and producing more leaves, some of the lettuce plants are removed to make way for other crops.

What’s your favorite vegetable to grow yourself?

My favorite to grow is garlic because it appear so early and gives hope for winter/early spring. My favorite to grow and eat is probably Patty Pan Squash. They are prolific, tasty, and give a gardner warm fuzzies. Golden Bantam open pollinated corn is another favorite of mine. I often eat it right in the garden.

I have so many favorites… snap peas are one, and root crops like onions, garlic, carrots etc… are another. I also love my perennials such as tarragon, sorrel, and chives because they taste especially delicious in early salads – I had them in my salad last night! And I eat a lot of wild plants this time of year in my salads, like wild sorrel, violets, etc.

I have had a garden for probably 15 years, and always did very well with tomatoes. As I have gotten older I have enjoyed the peace and quiet of vegetable gardening more and more.

This year I did a spring garden and the lettuce has been a huge bounty, in fact too much. But I am taking it into my office and sharing it with co-workers and that has brought all of us great happiness. It’s a wonderful thing.

Your blog and the podcasts inspire me and I greatly appreciate them.

This is a daily journal of my efforts to cultivate a more simple life, through local eating, gardening and so many other things. We used to live in a small suburban neighborhood Ohio but moved to 153 acres in Liberty, Maine in 2012.
