And So It Begins….
The seed catalogs started arriving a few weeks ago, I quickly put them aside in a drawer because I don’t look at them until the new year comes. As the years go on, Johnny’s Selected Seeds is becoming my go-to spot for seed buying. Not only are they local (only 20 miles north of me), they have a fantastic selection as well. I still buy from a few other sources as well.
Now they are out and I’m looking over my seed stash and trying to decide what to buy. Thankfully, since I saved so many seed for my store, I don’t need much at all. Onion seeds of course, they need to be fresh each year, and perhaps a few new varieties of flowers for the cutting garden. Even though I don’t need many seeds doesn’t mean I won’t be buying seeds, such is the nature of gardening.
What’s your favorite seed catalog this year?
Head on over and check out the seeds available at Seeds & Sundries, support the blog and get some of the seeds you need at the same time.

Susy, yes, gardeners just like to buy seeds whether they need them or not. I am not so much into seed saving although I have grown from seeds that others have saved for me. My favorite seed company is Baker Creek. It’s a little farther than 20 miles away but still is within a few hours driving. I have two long time seed companies that are close to me. Henry Fields and Earl May Nursery come from the little town of Shenandoah, Iowa. They are about an hour away from where I live. I’ve always intended to go visit their farms but haven’t done that yet. I have visited Baker Creek and it’s an amazing place in Missouri. They have a festival every year in May and bring in speakers, vendors, and entertainment. A natural organic restaurant serves the most amazing food. A seed store is jam packed with every kind of open pollinated plant imaginable. It was a great experience and I hope to get back there again someday.
Have you ever visited Johnny’s seed farm? Joel Salatin highly recommends Johnny’s seeds.
Have a great seed hunting day.

Fedco–hands down. For trees, too. It’s about 10 minutes farther away than Johnny’s. We are lucky to have two amazing seed places so close to home.

I too would like to give a nod to Fedco. Not the glossy photo filled catalog like many others, but great information and excellent seeds. I particularly like the fact that they provide information on where the seed comes from. I prefer to support small local producers (yea Seeds & Sundries) vs. large multinational corporations that are solely profit driven. Fedco provides the information I need to make that informed choice.
