Fresh Cilantro

February 27th, 2018

I’m finally harvesting my own homegrown cilantro from under the grow lights and it’s AMAZING!!! I made a large batch of both corn salsa and guacamole the other evening for dinner. Freshly harvested cilantro is always much tastier than the stuff from the grocery store, much cheaper too.

I have the plants growing in soil blocks and this harvest was a thinning. I’ll let one plant continue growing in each block. In the past, I’ve grow in in a deeper windowbox style container. It did OK, but eventually got aphids. I’m thinking this method may work better, especially if I seed in succession.

Are you harvesting anything for your plate?

Susy, I always have intentions of Winter micro greens but by the time Christmas is over, I just need a rest from the hustle and bustle. Then by the time I get my mojo back, it’s February and time to start planning and thinking about starting seeds for the gardening year. I have started my green pepper seeds by sprouting them on a moist paper towel and then planting them in potting mix in the 72 cell seed starting tray. I don’t really need 72 peppers but out of the 72 I’m hoping to find about 13 good ones to plant in the garden with a backup supply in case this crazy weather year decided to throw some freezing temperatures at the garden. There’s always a threat of hail all through the Spring. From experience I’ve learned to always have a backup plan for the backup plan.

    Have a great Cilantro day.

I remember your posts about soil mixing in past years- did you share anything about making soil blocks yet? I wondered if it was time consuming or reasonable to work in… thanks!

I now purchase the 512 mix from Johnny’s seeds and use it for soil blocks, it’s fantastic and well worth the price. It makes beautiful soil blocks.

This is a daily journal of my efforts to cultivate a more simple life, through local eating, gardening and so many other things. We used to live in a small suburban neighborhood Ohio but moved to 153 acres in Liberty, Maine in 2012.
