Grow Light Garden

March 5th, 2018

Now that it’s almost time to start planting things directly in the ground outside, I have my indoor winter grow light garden going in full swing.

I’ve been harvesting greens for salads each evening, along with lots of cilantro and arugula for breakfast.

I water every Sunday with a diluted liquid kelp fertilizer, it seems to be keeping the greens growing nicely and producing lots of fresh leaves each week.

Grow light space will become quite limited soon, this past weekend I started four flats of onions and three half flats of other things (celery, fennel, and flowers).

What’s under your grow lights this week?

I would love to start growing my salad and things with a set up like yours. I don’t have much of a yard but do have an enclosed porch. Where did you get everything in your set up? Thanks!

I got the light shelf from my mom, she got it from Gardener’s Supply. Johnny’s Seeds has nice ones too. If you’re not growing a ton, a tabletop stand would be perfect, then you could have it out when you want to grow and store it when not.

Thanks for this info. I’m glad you mentioned the table top idea. That is perfect for me and I have a fold-up table already on hand to put to use. Did your lights come with the shelving though? What is a good light fixture and bulb to use, and where to get them. Please excuse my ignorance on this!

I’d look at Johnny’s seeds. They have a wide variety. My bulbs and lights came together with the grow light shelf. Some people I know use regular fluorescent tubes, I’ve always used the grow light ones so I can’t personally say if they work as well. This is a nice tabletop light.

    Hi Susy-
I enjoy your blog and all of the gardening inspiration I get! I am wondering what fertilizer you mentioned using? I typically use fish emulsion but am avoiding using it indoors. (Made that error last year and I still hear about it!) also you mentioned four flats of onions- how many seed are you starting ? I am concerned that I’ve crowded mine with two seeds packs per flat .
    Thanks!

Susy, I the only thing I have under the grow lights are onion sets. I want to sow some onion seed again this year but just haven’t done it yet. I do have green peppers and eggplant sown and waiting to sprout. When they sprout, I’ll be putting them under the grow lights.

I haven’t used the grow light bulbs but only the daylight bulbs that can be found in any home improvement store. They seem to work just fine.

Have a great day under the grow lights.
