Getting into Full Swing

March 28th, 2018

Seed starting is starting to get into full swing. This past weekend, all the peppers were started. I started almost an entire flat, 31 cells in all, featuring 12 varieties.

I like to grow a wide variety of peppers. This year I’m adding peppers to make canned green chiles and to dry for making mole. I’m always excited about trying new varieties, this year is no exception!

What kinds of peppers are you planning on growing this year?

Susy, I mostly grow California Wonder bell peppers. It’s not challenging and always comes out great. Last year I had a great harvest and put about 30 stuffed peppers in the freezer. I also had about 10 or 12 bags of chopped peppers for soups and omelettes. I’m not much of one for hot peppers. This year I might try to make some salsa. It seems relatively easy and I like salsa if it’s not too hot. The peppers are already about three inches high and need to be potted up into plastic cups.

Have a great pepper planting day.

Last year I grew about 12 different kinds, but I am cutting back and olanting a lot more of certain varieties that we enjoy. I am going to do the same with cucumbers so I have enough to pickle! So, this year: Emerald giant, early jalapeño, padron. Cukes: lots of French Parisian and Picling, and a few Armenian burpless for eating. I am planting about 20 emerald giant.

Ha. I am also growing 12 varieties and planted them on the same day that you did. I have Carmen, Ancho Poblano, Peacework Sweet, Flavorburst Sweet, Shishito, Hinklehatz, Cayenne, Czech Black, Chimayo, Bulgarian Carrot, Habanero, and Ho Chi Minh. All different than yours, right? I love growing peppers and will be curious to see what does best for you this summer.

This is a daily journal of my efforts to cultivate a more simple life, through local eating, gardening and so many other things. We used to live in a small suburban neighborhood Ohio but moved to 153 acres in Liberty, Maine in 2012.
