New Houseplants

February 20th, 2019

Even though I have plans of “not buying any new plants this year” I break that each and every year. This year I lasted until mid-February until I saw this cyclamen at a local store. I thought it would be the perfect addition to the house to add some color. Growing up, my mom had the house filled with houseplant, typically ones that bloomed with big, colorful blossoms.

I also got an African violet with beautiful leaves. It had one slightly wilted flower, which was stunning. That made it into the my cart as well, I’ll post photos when the bud opens up. I’ve always wanted to add cyclamens to the outdoor garden, I’ve just never gotten around to it. Will this year be the year? If not I have one in the house to enjoy!

Are you a houseplant person? What’s your favorite houseplant? Does it bloom?

I was a houseplant person for many years. Although I love my house, I miss the long, perfectly positioned kitchen window in our last apartment that was home to a dozen+ African violets. A few moved with us, but most were gifted to friends. We mounted a shelf across our regular-sized kitchen window, and 3 violets are perched there alongside some jade plants. One violet is finishing up flowering now, and another is just starting to form some new buds. It’s not the constant stream of flowers I had previously, but any pops of color at this time of year are welcome.

I love cyclamen! I’ve never really kept them as an indoor plant before, though I’ve rescued end of season plants and tried to sow them in the ground for a few months before they die out.

My most favorite houseplant is a pothos that began as a cutting from my mother’s pothos that she has had since I was a child.

My second favorite is African violets.

Third is orchids, when I can keep them alive. 😁
