Babies

June 25th, 2020

This is the season of babies, baby birds in particular. You can hear them in almost every tree. This year we had a nest of woodpeckers in the big ash tree out front. We heard the babies for a few days before finally being able to locate the nest.

We watched and watched to see the babies, after a week or two of them being super loud, we were able to spot them.

A week later, they fledged and it’s been quiet in the ash tree again.

Susy, I had a Robin nest on my hanging basket trellis right above my front door. For weeks the Momma Robin would dive bomb me when I went in and out of the front door. If I sat on the front patio by the front door, I would get severely scolded for being too close to the nest. Then one day I saw three little beaks above the nest rim with mouths wide open. And one sad day the nest was empty and all was quiet. The babies had flown the nest and Momma Robin was no where in sight. I kind of miss the daily scolding and hope that some day they will return.

Have a great bird watching day in the garden.

Our neighbor had the same issue (in her wreath by the front door). It’s always great to see them up close!

I’m surprised you have a healthy Ash Tree! All of the ash trees in Illinois are cut down due to the ash borer.
