Little Lettuce Seedling

July 8th, 2008

The little lettuce seedlings have gotten their first set of true leaves. You can already tell what color of lettuce it’s going to be.

I planted lettuce this spring with sad results. My seedlings did not look anything like yours which were very healthy looking. I started them in a seedling tray using a commercial seed starter soil and then topped with a plastic cover. I then put them in a south facing window which receives tons of light. I did not use a fertilizer so that may be part of the problem. We have started a compost bin but nothing usable as yet. We built a sfg last fall and I just transplanted the seedlings under a hoop house after spending some time in a cold frame. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they will survive but its very disappointing after seeing your seedlings. This is my first attempt at gardening and don’t want to start with a failure. Any ideas where I went wrong?
