Friday Favorites + Free Ethel Gloves
If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you’ve most likely heard about my love for Ethel Gloves. If you haven’t heard me talk about how wonderful and comfortable they are, you’ve probably noticed them in my photos, they are truly beautiful gloves. Ethels are the perfect gardening glove, offering a great fit that gives you dexterity while gardening. You can do everything from heavy digging to pulling out teeny tiny seedlings in them.
My Ethel’s get plenty of wear, in the summer they are used a couple hours a day. I’ve already worn through 2 pairs in the last 2 years. I now have a pair of their leather gloves that I’ll be using for the tougher tasks in the garden, like building all those rock walls.
One of my favorite features of Ethel Gloves is their washability. I’m sure all of you gardeners know the pain of gardening gloves that get wet and then are stiff as boards, never again allowing the dexterity that they had when new. This is not the case with Ethel Gloves, they get slightly stiff after getting wet and drying, but all you have to do is throw them in the washer and when you get them out they’re soft as new.
In October I got a pair of the new Ethel Utility Gloves. I’ve never been a fan of rubberized gloves for gardening and I thought they wouldn’t allow the dexterity that regular Ethel’s offer. The dexterity is slightly less, but the warmth is much better, which for us northern gardeners is a huge deal. I used these gloves for all of my fall gardening chores and they were perfect since fall chores here in the North tend to be wet. I also used them when decorating the front of the house for Christmas, which is a task they work beautifully for as well. I now love the utility gloves as much as the Signature Ethel Gloves.
Ethel also is developing an insulated gardening gloves in the works, which I’m testing at the moment. How perfect is this for us Northern gardeners, especially those of us that want to do more winter gardening.
Ethel Gloves make a wonderful Christmas gift for that gardener in your life, I was so excited to receive my first pair from Mr Chiots 2 years ago. Use coupon code: HOLIDAY25 to save 25% off your order. Ethel was kind enough to send me a pair of Traditional Gloves to give away on my blog. Comment below and you’ll be entered in the drawing for a free pair of Ethel Gloves. I’ll announce the winner on next weeks Friday Favorite.
What’s your favorite kind of gardening glove?
UPDATE: Just got a call from the friendly folks at Ethel and they’re going to give away 4 more pairs of gloves in this contest. So now there are 5 pairs in the giveaway…your odds just got much better!

Absolutely love your blog! I’ve been trying to find a pair of gardening gloves that suit me, so will be happy to try the Ethel gloves if possible! Thank you for the opportunity!

I usually go for rubberized gloves for wetness and briar protection. I haven’t heard of Ethel Gloves, but now I guess I’ll just have to look into them :) Thanks

I’ve never found a good glove that I like, but I’ve always just used ones from a local retailer. I’ll have to check these out!

they look like they would be good ones, but i have never seen or heard of them locally, will be looking for some in the garden store this year

I have never heard of Ethel gloves but think I will definitely give these a try! I tend to try for the inexpensive rubberized ones but they don’t last long!

How cute these gloves look…and functional as well…wow! Haven’t heard of this brand but I’m going to the website now.

I prefer naked hands when possible, but resort to my leather work gloves for things like muddy tasks and dealing with the evil blackberries. Those leather ones do get awfully stiff, though . . .

Those look great! If I win, I’ll have to get another pair because my daughter (14) always runs off with my good ones!

There is something fun about digging the dirt out from under your fingernails…. But those work gloves look pretty cozy :-)

I belong to a small garden club. Every year we have a speaker from a local nursery give a presentation. She always brings some of her favorite garden tools to share. This year she brought the coolest garden gloves. I didn’t win them but I think they were this brand. Cool.

I’d be so excited to try those! I saw your post on them earlier and have wanted a pair ever since!

oh yes, count me in!

My daughter and I both have a pair of Ethyl gloves and love them! An extra pair would be great around here since my young teen son has been known to wear mine when we have him working and then I can’t find them because he isn’t great at putting them back.
to Judy's comment
I haven’t found any I love yet. I use just cloth ones because I can wash them and they fit well, but they aren’t waterproof or sturdy.
Thanks!

i didn’t realize they had so many different kinds!

Ooooooh, I’d love some new gloves! I usually get Mud Gloves. They fit my slender hands well and keep me less muddy…. or more muddy depending on how you look at it.

In winter at work in the Cincinnati Parks, I love Duluth Trading’s Winterproof Gauntlet Gloves. They are the only ones I’ve found so far that keep me warm and dry, and hold up against all the scratches and scrapes of the job. I am always on the lookout for the perfect glove!

growing up, i never used gloves because of the lack of dexterity. i have small hands, but even the ladies gloves were too bulky – i couldn’t feel what i was doing. however, since i’ve read about your ethel gloves, i’ve been coveting a pair!!
to kirsten's comment
These gloves look great… I go back and forth between using gloves and not. Most of the ones I have were given to me and are the kind that get stiff and yucky when they get wet or soiled with mud. However I did recently get a pair similar to you “utility gloves” and love how they form to my hands (and keep them warm in our Northern NY climate).
to Denise's comment
Wow, I’ve never heard of these before but they look great. Sign me up!

Love your blog! Would love some Ethel’s! (Wish there were some Lucy’s too!)

That’s fun, thanks for the giveaway! I’ve seen Ethel’s ads in magazines – but never in person. They look neat. It’s hard to find gloves for small hands that can actually be worn and used – not just be pretty.

I’ve got a few favorite gloves. For heavy duty farm work I use West County gloves, and I especially love their waterproof/insulated winter gloves (I also use these for winter horseback riding/training- they’re great!)
For light weeding or wet compost work I use the rubberized gloves similar to the Ethyl gloves, but I’m not sure of the brand. I just discovered the lightweight rubberized gloves last year and they’re a great break from hot sweaty west county gloves in the dead heat of the summer.
I also had a pair of great Wells Lamont leather gloves that had padded palms and I loved to use them for tilling work because they cushioned my hands a bit. Unfortunately they wore out quickly in the fingers and, being leather, once they got wet they became rock hard and I still haven’t figured out how to recondition them!
Thanks for sharing your fantastic blog. I discovered it a few weeks ago and have been lurking daily since!
to Emily Jenkins's comment
I hate gloves that don’t wash well so mostly I just get dirty hands since they wash (mostly) fine. if I have dirt embedded in my hands or under my fingernails, well, then, you know I’m a gardener, don’t you? I have some leather work gloves that I use when I don’t need much dexterity, but they aren’t ideal either.
Those Ethel gloves are lovely, though, and I’ll admit I’d love to try a pair!

gloves are a gardener’s closest friend. we’d love to meet ethel!

These gloves look perfect. I’ve been trying for a while now to find really good gloves. I think these may just do the trick.
Thanks for the great review!

I never wear gloves…probably because I’ve never found a good pair!
Great photos…as always!

I use canvas gloves with rubber dots on the palms and fingers. I also have a pair of leather gloves for heavier work. I need to find a lefty to share gloves with because I always wear out the right-hand glove first.

Maybe you’ve answered my glove searching prayers. Always on the hunt for good pair. Thanks!
to Hailey's comment
Those look so comfy, but perfectly utilitarian. I’m not much of a glove-wearer, but I could see those coming in handy.
to Christine McCormick's comment
I have yet to find a glove that doesn’t further diminish what little dexterity I have. These sound perfect.
to Rue's comment
I have yet to find gardening gloves I like. Usually I just keep my hands bare…and regret it! I would love to win these gloves, and if I don’t, I’m going to still give them a try…
to Lynda's comment
Those gloves look wonderful! I do not have a favorite pair – it just depends on what I can find that fits!
A pair of Ethel’s is on my wish list.
to Annette's comment
Oh, I would love a pair of these to give my Mom for Christmas!
to mamaraby's comment
I tend not to wear gloves unless I’m pruning trees or doing some other tough job. I like the dirt under my nails.
to Whitney's comment
Those sound convincing. I’ll need to try the Ethel gloves. I have had NO luck when it comes to gloves. After about 15 minutes my gloves usually end up on the grass after I throw them off in annoyance, using my hands instead. Where I love the feel of gardening with my bare hands, the toll it takes on my skin is pretty bad. Thanks for introducing Ethel!

Oh how I would love to win the Ethel gloves. Please enter me in this giveaway..
to Vera Lauterbach's comment
More often than not I will step out to the garden ‘just to look’ which turns into pulling that weed there and then all those weeds over there. My hands are very dirty before I think of gloves.
to Ryan's comment
I’d take a chance for a second pair! :) I like mine!!!!

I haven’t used gloves much because I can’t seem to find a pair that I like. But I’d like to give Ethels a try!
to Sarah H's comment
I usually wear mine out too quickly. Maybe that utility style would be good for me!
to Jerilee Costa's comment
I’ll have to keep Ethel in mind. I usually don’t wear gloves when gardening, but there are just certain tasks that gloves are needed. The ones I own don’t have the dexterity that I would like.
On a side note, I got your card today. Absolutely gorgeous. And I definitely like the postcard style. I think I’m going to do that for our cards next year.
