On Being Lucky + Ethel Glove Giveaway
I never set out to become a photographer, writer, blogger, or social media strategist – those things just kind of happened along the way. Often the best things life are those that we stumble into because of an interest or hobby that we have. It’s not that I’m especially lucky; I work hard, put in lots of hours, and I’m finally reaping some rewards (a few more great things in the works). The quote by Thomas Jefferson, “I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.” is quite true, at least in my case.
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you know that I started working for Ethel Gloves last year. After singing about my love for them here at Chiot’s Run, they contacted me and wanted me to blog for them. Then they started asking me to use a few of my photos in their publicity. Pretty soon they were sending me gloves to shoot for their various campaigns.
Now, pretty much all the photos you see at Ethel came from my camera (my hands, Mr Chiots shooting). My keyboard is the one that updates their Twitter & Facebook accounts, and yours truly is curating their Pinterest Boards. I’m happy to work for a company that makes a product I love and use almost every day.
The great thing about this job is that it helps me pay the bills associated with this blog. Since I had to upgrade to a virtual private server a few months ago the bills are getting quite high each month! Another great thing about it is that I get to do giveaways! All you have to do is comment on this post and you’ll be entered to win a pair of Ethel Gloves. Congrats to Crazy Lady Farm who is the winner of this contest.
What has you feeling lucky lately? If you’re lucky enough to win a pair of Ethel Gloves, which ones would you like?

These gloves look beautiful, functional and practical! I would love to get my hands in these and start digging and planting

I’m liking the looks of the Saffron lightweight, sustainable gloves. Congrats on your success–nice to see your hard work paying off; really enjoy your blog!

Thank you for letting us know about ethel gloves.
I don’t like the way mens gloves fit, so I’d like woman’s gloves. I’d sure like to win the green leather gloves. Each spring I prune a big patch of Blackberries and also my roses. I need a durable glovethat can protect my hands from the thorns and from all the potential “owies” that come with working on a suburban homestead.
to Little Homestead in the Village's comment
…Okay, first of all, how cute are you?! :o)
…And seriously, pick one?! I couldn’t decide between the green leather glove, the jubilee kids, the signature, seaweed, canterbury, rose 4x (which would be totally handy for me – pardon the pun, “handy”, “gloves”, get it? *wink*wink*nudge*nudge* :o). Oh, and the moss and sage.
…Sadly Lady Luck hasn’t been a visitor here at our lil’ homestead as of late. My husband did find what he calls a “lucky penny” in our driveway the other day. He brought it in and put it on the kitchen windowsill. He claims it’s gonna bring us luck. I’m going with him on this one so we shall see. ;o)
…Thank you for the giveaway Susy & Ethel Gloves! :o)
…Oh, and great job Mr. Chiots on the lil’ share button thingy to my left over there. So handy! Now pinning! :o)
…Enjoy your day!
…Blessings :o)

…Oops, my mistake there. That’s not for pinning or sharing on FB I see but it’s still very handy nonetheless. :o)

They’re all so lovely, but the Signature and Seaweed are special.
I’m so glad that you found something that you love to do. I’ve added Ethel Gloves to facebook, and read your updates each day. You’ve done an awesome job.

Hello,
I’ve been reading your posts for so long, but this is the first post I’ve replied to. I think we share a lot of interests, even though we have so many miles between us. it seems that I constantly agree with what you are saying and try many of your ideas. Your pics are always beautiful, they have pushed me to start my own blog on my everyday doings. I’m just starting of course and I have lots to learn. We also share gardening and puttering around the yard as one of the main things that we enjoy. Its nice to have nice tools and work clothing to do it with. I am absolutely smitten with Ethel gloves, but I’ve yet to own a pair. If I had to choose I would pick the Seaweed or the Jubilee, but I would be over the top for any of them. I really wish the were more available where we are. Anyway, have a wonderful day! Nice to finally send you a line.

Oh how pretty! I really like the Rendezvous but its the garden 4x that I need. Thank you so very much for taking the time that you put into your blog. You truly are an inspiration!
to Peggy's comment
I do have to say that they look so much better in use on real hands (like in your photos) than just on the web page. Difficult to choose just one, but either the bamboo or leather look good to me right now. Thanks for the giveaway!

I found Ethel Gloves on Facebook and this Christmas had the joy of giving them to many friends and family. I think I placed 5 orders.
Then much to my delight I found Chiots Run. I tell everyone about you even though I am not a blogger I make an exception for you!!
Love the photographs and your view of things.
thanks

It looks like they would be a great addition to any gardener because we know they get a good workout at Chiots Run. I enjoy your blog alot and I must say you look very happy with all the work you do.
Thanks for sharing with us.

I love them! I have the rose gloves.. wish they made a jacket too, my Rose’s are nasty defensive ;-)
The Canterbury or the Seaweed are my faves.
Thank you!
to Tamika's comment
I purchased the bamboo gloves and love their comfort and stylish protection, I love roses so I think I would try the longer style. I admire your zest for the simple pleasures in life and your commitment to making the world a bettter place by integrating your local community to everyday living! You are wonderful at what you do…kudos and keep it up.

I’ve found 3 four-leaf clovers and five-leaf clover in the past couple of weeks so I am feeling really lucky! I am hoping to be lucky with my garden this year! I like the Jubilee or Regency gloves.
to Allie's comment
I would love to have a pair myself, but I think I would chose a pair of gloves for my 8 year old twin daughters. We have been on the lookout for youth gardening gloves. Cheap Dora or Cars gloves are all we can find. I think the jubilee gloves are the prettiest (b/c that matters!).
to Megan's comment
you rock….in case I have not told you that lately :)
to Kelly's comment
I bought my first pair of Ethel Gloves becuase I first read about them on your blog. I really do love them and I will never go back to anything else! (What’s the best way to clean them?)
How blessed you are to have “stumbled” into your job… and your hard work is inspiring. Great work!
to Lori's comment
PS: I love the Komen gloves. Having lost a close friend to breast cancer, they would be a nice tribute to her. Heck, even if I don’t win the giveaway, I might just hop over to Ethel now and buy a pair!
to Lori's comment
A good pair of gloves, especially for the garden is always something I need. Working as a nurse in an outpatient surgical setting, I always feel self concious of how my hands look. Working outside is a way of life for my husband and me. We have many outdoor interests that make gloves a necessity. A new pair of Ethel’s, no matter what style or type would be wonderful.
to Terri's comment
I love all of them! I really need a pair of the 4X but I also love some of the newprints! I love Ethel gloves!

I feel lucky to have a home with some land that I can grow my own food on. I really need a new pair of gardening gloves and would love to try some from Ethel! The saffron and moss colors are very nice!

I would love to have a pair! Thank you for the chance and I love your blog, Peggy

I love that you have blogged about this feeling of luck! I have been finding it recently in my own life – bold moves that I never thought I’d have the guts to make are just paying off in ways I never expected. All hard work, of course (I work more now than I ever did before, even when I was getting a master’s degree and working at the same time), but amazing what the rewards are.
I love the Rendevous and Signature gloves…oh, and the sustainable bamboo…ok, I love all of the gloves. :)
to Melissa's comment
Would love to try out these gloves! So stylish too! Thanks!
to Chrissy's comment
Oh, wow! I have Rendezvous, but they’ve definitely seen better days, so I’d love to have a new pair. They are without question, the best gardening gloves I’ve ever used. I try to remind myself how lucky I am everyday to have the life that I have. Just last night Jeremy and I were driving back from watching my niece’s teeball game in our hometown, where we caught up with some of his family and some of my old friends, and he said “ya know, we have it pretty good, don’t we?” I have to agree.
to Jennelle's comment
Congratulations. I think it is wonderful that blogging has brought you such rewards. The Komen gloves are wonderful.

For almost 10yrs my husband has been trying and trying to find a job, in his field, in VT. All his family is there and with two active boys, one with complications, life will be so much easier if we’re there. Finally, just this spring, he’s found a job right in a perfect location for us (between family locations, great school district with the ability to help our son). I’m scared that I’ll siphon some of that luck away in trying for this contest, but maybe I just want to shout a little joy out in thanks.
I’ve wondered… how durable are the Ethyl gloves? The crimson ones would contrast nicely against garden plants, I’d think.
to Kelly H.'s comment
So, I’m guessing I need to move beyond 2.75 daily readers before company’s start giving me free stuff?
to Turling's comment
I have bought many pairs of gardening gloves over the years and end up never wearing them…because they sag or bag or feel weird. As a result my hands look pretty crummy for the whole of gardening season…which I never mind until I am sitting in church or at a get together…..then I am embarrassed. I believe I would enjoy wearing a pair that fit properly…and provided freedom of movement. It just is so hard to give up the feel of dirt….It is addicting…but in a good way:) Thanks for the opportunity~Susy.

Suzy, I’ve been reading your blog for years. I don’t often comment anymore because my time is so limited. Two kids, a garden, hens, and housework keep me pretty busy these days. But I do try to make time to stop in each week – I learn a lot from you! (And have even taken my que to paint our own outdated green shutters black during a recent visit here.) Keep the ideas coming!
Like you, I am a frugal girl. But I do appreciate good quality. For now, I’ve been making do with an inexpensive pair of gardening gloves. When they wear out, I hope to replace them with Ethel gloves in the Jubilee pattern.
to Melissa's comment
Lack of good gloves is one of the reasons/excuses my wife uses to not work in the garden. Perhaps a nice pair of gloves would help her delve into one of my passions. Thanks for your blog, I have lurked for 2+ years and enjoyed all of your posts.
to Kevin's comment
I agree, luck and hard work often go hand in hand… or glove in glove! I keep looking at the Ethel Gloves but as others have said, it is hard to pick just one. Thank you for the opportunity to win a pair!
to Michelle Marie's comment
Love the blog and congratulations on your “luck” :) Would love to have a pair of Ethel gloves for digging into garden chores!

I’m always hunting for good garden gloves. These look like they might fit the bill!

I feel so lucky to have a big sunny yard in a rough real estate area. After all, I’m out there every day working in my garden.
I love that Ethel gloves fit (and move) as gloves should–and especially that they come in large sizes because my hands are not dainty. I have gone through the fingertips of two pairs though, so my next pair will be the 4X variety.

Luck. Funny you should ask. I was just feeling lucky for the time my husband and I have to spend with our children. I’m a stay-at-home mama and he has a great flexible job. We are so lucky.
PS – I loooove the Regency gloves!
to Ginger's comment
I do not need to be entered for the gloves, I already own a couple of pairs due to you! ♥
But I did want to mention that you are indeed lucky, it’s a blessed thing too! I live vicariously through those I look up to, and you are definitely one of them. In your experiences, I’ve been transferring to natural products, better cleaning solutions, and gardening more seasonally! All I need is your tender touch for Hydrangea’s and I’ll be set. Hee! ♥
Thank you for everything you post, it’s really uplifting when I’m standing here at work, slowly counting down the hours till I’m back home in my garden with my hands in the soil.
Well, while wearing my Ethel gloves. :D
to Donna B.'s comment
I’d love the Jubilee for Kids for my 8 yr old granddaughter. Her little hands have turned into “paws” from not using gloves and I’d love to share with her the habit of properly protecting them.
to Nytestar's comment
I would be thrilled to win the “sophisticated and durable Leather Gloves!!”
We live in a windy area. The leather gloves would get used, and used, and used to protect my hands while gathering the fallen branches of our Oak Trees.
to Sandy's comment
I have over 10 pairs of gloves; I also carry 2-5 sets in the car along with pruners in case I end up near our Extension Office Garden (I’m a Master Gardener in NC). I am particularly interested in the rose 4x gloves; my beloved Zepherine Drouhin rose (a Bourbon scented climber) has few thorns, but I have other roses from which I do need protection. However, I’m open to ANY pair! I have never had Ethel gloves and am always open to testing a brand new to me. Would love to find a set that didn’t blow out the fingers from my obsessive weeding…

I’ve been so excited to watch your blogging blossom over recent months, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else is in store for you. I have to admit, though, sometimes I selfishly worry that you’ll get so big that you’ll have to give up Chiot’s Run blog! I don’t think I could suffer the loss!
Cheers to your success-

I like reading your posts and work a alot in the dirt. I do not wear gloves as it doesn’t seem right, but would love a good pair to work in the brambles, so whichever pair is good for that, I would take those. I made a mess of my hands the other day cutting out dead raspberry canes and have more raspberries and blackberries to get done. Many thanks. the gloves look like very good ones.
to Deb's comment
I like the Sage gloves. I wear gloves frequently when working in the garden.

Thank you

Oh the Saffron gloves look so good. I would definitely be in fashion as I plant my seeds from Renee’s wearing a pair of these.
Glad I found your site.

Your story is lovely and inspiring!
For those of us with a passion for gardening and a preference for longer fingernails, excellent gloves are a must! I haven’t tried Ethel but if they resist nail poke-through, I would feel extremely lucky to have some!
Thank you!
to Barbara Poulsen's comment
I just happened on your blog from the connection with Renee’s Seeds. I agree. I have been lucky in life. When I focus towards a goal, sometimes just moving toward your passion will take you places you never imagined you could go.
I am a passionate gardener and just returned from South America. One thing that amazed me was that the people of the south american countries know there plants and the healing properties. It is passed along from ancient times through families. It is everyday that they pinch some pennyroyal for a tummy ache.
Perhaps it is because we are a relatively young country, the settlers separated themselves from the native Americans wanting to control them, so we did not share and collect the knowledge of the past on this continent that we could have.
Just something I feel passionate about right now. You, being an artist and gardener and blogger might be interested in waking up the people and lets teach the children what we have been forgetting. Plants for healthy living. Healing ourselves and keeping connected to the land.
….And the garden gloves look great. Haven’t seen them… Love the blue pattern you are wearing.
Does anyone miss the old Smith and Hawkens garden stores? I don’t usually like to support the chain stores, but they were a great environment for garden shopping!

I love the wonderful purple gloves

I think I love the Jubilees a lot, and they come in X-large for my long (somewhat alien) fingers!
