On Being Lucky + Ethel Glove Giveaway
I never set out to become a photographer, writer, blogger, or social media strategist – those things just kind of happened along the way. Often the best things life are those that we stumble into because of an interest or hobby that we have. It’s not that I’m especially lucky; I work hard, put in lots of hours, and I’m finally reaping some rewards (a few more great things in the works). The quote by Thomas Jefferson, “I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.” is quite true, at least in my case.
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you know that I started working for Ethel Gloves last year. After singing about my love for them here at Chiot’s Run, they contacted me and wanted me to blog for them. Then they started asking me to use a few of my photos in their publicity. Pretty soon they were sending me gloves to shoot for their various campaigns.
Now, pretty much all the photos you see at Ethel came from my camera (my hands, Mr Chiots shooting). My keyboard is the one that updates their Twitter & Facebook accounts, and yours truly is curating their Pinterest Boards. I’m happy to work for a company that makes a product I love and use almost every day.
The great thing about this job is that it helps me pay the bills associated with this blog. Since I had to upgrade to a virtual private server a few months ago the bills are getting quite high each month! Another great thing about it is that I get to do giveaways! All you have to do is comment on this post and you’ll be entered to win a pair of Ethel Gloves. Congrats to Crazy Lady Farm who is the winner of this contest.
What has you feeling lucky lately? If you’re lucky enough to win a pair of Ethel Gloves, which ones would you like?

Been reading and thoroughly enjoying your blog for a long time! Seeing your lovely picture with the jeans worn at the knees reminded me of a quote I read somewhere “The sign of a good gardener is brown knees, not a green thumb.” :)
Have a lovely day and keep blogging as I really look forward to reading your posts. BTW, love the printed gloves you are wearing.

I found the breast cancer gloves at Lowe’s and snagged them as my first pair – LOVE them! I’d love to add the Jubilee pattern to my gardening basket

I love the connection between hard work and rewards. Good for you.

I’ve been coveting these gloves for a while, never having had a good set of work gloves. Any all purpose pair would do me well!

I have one pair of Ethel gloves now, and I’d love to add the Jubilee or Tudor style glove, even if to share with a friend! Thanks!

You have a wonderful site – I too have that nasty clay and rock in my little half acre, it’s also nice and compacted to my total dismay!! We moved to south Alabama away from my 2 acre yard of wonderful black loam in Illinois – how I miss that soil, but not the winters. Anyway, when you are constantly working in heavy soil with rock you go thru gloves right and left (mostly right) ha – the fingers just do not last more than a few days. If I were fortunate enough to win a pair of these gloves any of them would be fine but I think the green leather would benefit my poor little fingers the most. Thanks and thank you for having such a great informative site. Joyce H.

I feel lucky to have my health, that I can go about my day with simple things like walking, exercising, getting in my car and driving to where ever I need to go, without the challenges and struggles that others may face. I feel lucky for my family, that we love and care for each other, and that my baby girl is a happy and healthy child. I would trade in winning the lottery for these things any day, hands down, so I feel I am one of the luckiest people on earth already. If I happen to win, I would love the garden 4x style.
to Diana's comment
I would love the Rose 4x in large. Those look quite Victorian, perfect for being out in the rose garden. :)

I’ve never tried Ethel gloves, but they look great.

I’m a real DIY enthusiast, and a good pair of perfect fitting, long lasting gloves are a requirement for doing everything from building a new fence, to putting in springtime’s garden, to painting the house,… you get the idea. I’ve long been an admirer of Ethyl gloves as a good looking and durable product designed especially for women like me. The signature glove would work for me because I’d put it to work and in no time they’d be brown from gardening in the herbal patch and rose garden anyhow. Thank you Ethyl gloves for making a product especially for women!

Fun! The Jubilee blue swirl ones you are wearing are very nice. I just need to remember to wear gloves more when I’m outside. My hands would appreciate it.

I love the blue swirl ones.

I feel lucky to be alive! I lost my job last year, but I just look at it as an opportunity to spend more time in my garden growing food for my family. I’m also raising a few chickens for eggs and rabbits. I would love to own a pair of the Rose 4X gloves as I am always scratching up my wrists/arms. I have very large hands so would probably need the largest size you carry.

I love the bamboo cocoa ones in size medium! Thanks for sharing!

I would love a pair of the pink breast cancer gloves since I am a survivor. I purchased two pairs of Ethel gloves thanks to your recommendation and was shocked to see they were NOT made in the USA. Unfortunately I didn’t purchase the pink gloves at that time.

Good timing! I was planning to go buy some gardening gloves this week. I’d love to try the bamboo ones.

It’s funny, because I sort of fell into the work I do, too. I would never have predicted it – I was a psych major with an emphasis on child development and now I manage a gifts in kind program at a relief and development agency! I adore my work, my colleagues and the organization I work for. I feel so blessed that my hard work in various areas over the years led me here, to a place that so closely mirrors my own values. Awesome :-)
If I won gloves, I’d love to try the Garden 4x or the Bamboo Sage – they are all beautiful!

I love that quote by Jefferson…it’s so true. I always feel overwhelmed with how blessed I am with my husband. We have a wonderful relationship, and it never ceases to amaze me.
I love the Jubilee gloves, by the way.

What a wonderful and insightful article you’ve written. I like both Chiot’s Run and Ethel Gloves on FB. I love knowing the connection and story behind it. You are very lucky indeed. and I’m sure a very hard worker. let’s see, what do I feel lucky about? my two new passions are gardening and photography which have led me to these blogs and many others. I’ve learned a lot and feel blessed by it all. I would be even luckier if I won a pair of gloves! don’t know how I could possibly pick just one pair though! I guess I would have to go with the water proof garden utility glove. they’re machine washable too! thank you for this opportunity. keep up the good work.

I feel lucky because I have the opportunity to spend time growing a wonderful food and flora garden. It does take quite a bit of time and I can see why people that are crazily overworked can’t seem to find time to grow their own food or are disappointed with the results.
I tried a pair of Ethel gloves last year based on your writings and I liked them but broke of the fingers quickly. I see now that the utility glove or 4x glove would be good for me. Thanks for hosting the contest!

Luck has nothing to do with it. Honestly. It’s all your hard work. You know you are happiest when you’re working.

I’m in the process of buying my first house and it has a big garden – I can’t wait to get out there and try all the stuff I’ve learnt online on sites like yours. Thanks for all the inspiration :)

I love the Jubilee glove. My Mom’s name was Ethel..these would be special.
Thanks again.

i’ve been feeling good about all the tiny seedlings growing on my back porch. swamp milkweed, catmint, parker’s yarrow, dwarf indigo, plains coreopsis, dianthus barbatus, echinacea, black eyed susans….
But I know this has more to do with biology than luck!
I’d love the Rose 4X gloves– going to be taking a lot of cuttings from naturalized bushes in the pasture this fall :)
to Laura's comment
I am feeling lucky that the sun is out and the plants I neglected last year are giving me another chance this year! I would pick the Jubilee glove!
to Crystal's comment
I have been gardening most of my 62 years. Nothing feels better then the feel of warm soil on my hands. But I think I’m ready to trade in the dirt under my nails for a pair of the Jubilee gloves. My nails are permanently stained!

I bought pairs for my daughters and myself at Christmastime and we all love them. :) Thanks for the introduction! Picking one? That would be tough…

I just happened to stumble upon you on Pinterest and I must say, those are some sassy gloves! I’m a beginner vegetable gardener and I’ll be sure to keep up with you from now on!

I love the gloves! I’m always buying new gardening gloves!

Funny that seems like luck but when you do things that you trully enjoy, good things happen. I always get free seeds or plants and I always though it was luck too but then one day somebody told me that just hearing me talk about growing food has inspired her to do something because I trully transmitted my love of growing food as I talked about it. I have inspired many people to grow anything and that is the same vibe I get while I enjoy reading your blog: it inspires! Keep the good work it inspired me too. If I get a pair of gloves will be my luck if I have to pick probably the leather glove or Garden 4x are my favorites.
to WendyM's comment
I’ll take any gloves! I do love the pair I have and use them every time I’m in the garden. I particularly like the look of the regency gloves, you could definitely send those my way.
to Alyssa's comment
I go through many pairs of gardening gloves a year but I have never tired Ethel. I need a sturdy glove.

It is wonderful that you have found something you love so much. I’m sure you’ve seen the pin, “Sometimes…I see someone’s pins & I think we could *totally* be friends” I enjoy your posts/tweets/pins. Of course, my very favorite gloves are my Ethel’s. (Jubilee.)
to Debbie's comment
Jubilee, definitely Jubilee!! I love blue and white and the fingertips would come in handy while I’m digging around!
to Deb's comment
Can’t decide between the plum or jubilee…

For all the brambles I work with, would love to try the leather ones.

My grandmother, who instilled in me her love of all things outside, was named Ethel. Wearing these would remind me of her!

I’m feeling INCREDIBLY lucky because last week we learned that our 14-yr-old son, who docs thought was well on his way to kidney failure, has surprised everyone by having very little kidney damage. We were facing 6 mos. of chemo – and that was best case scenario; the more likely scenario docs prepared us for was that there simply wasn’t a treatment for the disease they feared he had. We are over the moon!! Your questions couldn’t come at a better time! ;-)
If I were to win, I’d like the chartreuse ones (next to Jubilee) — can’t remember the name!
Thanks for giving me a place to shout hooray!

I feel lucky that I get to keep bees at home for the first time this year..
I took a beekeeping class at a local educational farm, and now they want me to work for them, teaching other people about the bees. =) Yeah, it’s volunteer stuff for now, but who knows what it could lead to?
I have to admit, when I look at the gloves, I see the Rose 4X as beekeeping gloves. But the Leather Glove would suit my garden better.
Oh! I’m lucky too, that I was moved to the “sunny side” of the community garden! It only took three years to get there!
to Karen's comment
I’ve been mulling over a pair – I’d get whichever you said were best for large-ish hands.
to Carol's comment
fantastic! while a gardener, i’ve never worn gloves. gasp. i’ve always liked the dirt in my fingers. but we’ve now expanded into the rather painful world of hops & raspberries… it’s time to launch into glove land. that and i think my age is showing a bit b/c oh my goodness how dry my hands get after working in the garden now.
on being lucky… my own home business is also really starting to take off after 5 years of work & love & patience. and frankly, i feel like the luckiest lady in the world.
while new to your blog the passion you have for it all is clear. i’m glad it’s panning out for you.
