I Have Chickens

June 27th, 2012

After wanting chickens for years, I finally have some. Yesterday, I bought some chickens; a whole flock of them, ten hens and a lovely rooster.

They’re a cross between Rhode Island Red and Rhode Island White. According to their current owners, they’re great layers.

Oh Yeah,
they also came with a lovely coop,
a house, a sauna,
and 150 acres

in MAINE.
More about that tomorrow…

OH YAY. Bring on the details . . .

P.S. We have Rhode Island Reds. They are indeed good layers. Kind of wild, though, which might be mitigated by the cross-breeding to Whites? I don’t know anything about Rhode Island Whites.

We have chickens, too. We don’t let ours run free range until garden season is over. They are so spoiled, as are all of our pets. They love getting out of the pen, anytime they can.I hate it so, not being able to let them roam more.It hurts me to have to say “No.” when I know exactly what they want.To be out where the green grass and the bugs are.Hopefully, one day soon, we will have a better set up for them.We just purchased more land, also.

By the way, I’m in Maine right now on a family vacation in Kennebunkport. It’s beautiful sitting here in my sweatshirt having my coffee looking at the water. I am not looking forward to going back home to 110 degree temps.

CONGRATULATIONS! Off to your next adventure!

31 years ago today my husband and I married (in CT) and honeymooned in the Bar Harbor area before moving to his home area in rural western NY. We are getting close to having most of our children reasonably independent and HOPE to do a bit of traveling. Maine is on the short list! Please do post many pictures and words :)
We’ve had chickens for nearly 20 years. We eat the roosters and I sell eggs on the honor system off my front porch. They help disperse herding animal poo and are great on the bug population. (wherein great=deadly). RIR can be a little ornery at times but the white feathers on RIW make for easier plucking. These likely came as “Red Stars” or “Red Comets” or something similar, possibly from the local feed store.
I hope you are thinking about a chicken garden, and possibly your husband is thinking about some food plot “gardens” for his white tail friends?

You go guys! I know you will be even more excited when you get there. Love the chickens – they look about like mine. Mine are Golden Buff/ Golden Comets, they’re small but produce like the big girls. I haven’t had these babies a week and am totally in love with them. 150 acres is a good piece of land to work with. Lots of potential with all the plans I’m sure you have in mind. Love Maine – If you’re up for a visit someday, we will gladly come say hey! Can’t express how so very happy we are for you guys!
