Frost Kissed Seed Tin Giveaway

September 6th, 2012

Yesterday, we arrived home and found a package on the doorstep from Peaceful Valley Farm Supply. Of course that made me giddy, as packages of seeds and garden goodies always do! I’m very familiar with this company, because my parents have been ordering from them since I was a little girl. Back in the day, they were one of the few places to find organic gardening supplies.

Inside my package I found a big bag of Soil Builder Cover Crop with an envelope of inoculant. Being a huge fan of various cover crops and the wonderful benefits they provide, I’m really looking forward to trying this out!

I also received a collection of various seeds that I will experiment with planting this fall and winter. Which seeds arrived? ‘Little Finger’ carrots, ‘Flame’ lettuce, ‘Bloomsdale’ spinach, ‘Pink Beauty’ radish, ‘French Breakfast’ radish, ‘Sparkler’ radish, Mesclun mix, Braising greens mix, arugula, ‘Tres Fine’ endive, ‘Freckles’ lettuce, and ‘Black Seeded Simpson’ lettuce.

Along with all of the wonderful cold tolerant vegetables above, I also received the Frost Kissed Spring or Fall Mix Seed Tin. I plan on planting some of these this fall in a low tunnel to see how they do. The remaining seeds will be planted early next spring.

In order to kick start you fall garden, Peaceful Valley is going to be giving away a Frost Kissed Seed Tin to one lucky reader. All you have to do is comment on this post. Winner will be chosen September 12. Winner chosen, thanks to Random.org Joy Giles won. She said “Looks like a small Farmers’ Market to be in a tin. Would love to plant test garden with these.”

What’s your favorite fall/winter vegetable?

Even though Kale is usable during the summer, it is a favorite after a couple of good frosts. I’m very fond of winter squashes too. They just seem “right” as the days shorten and the leaves fall.

Pumpkins all the way! All summer long I threaten the plants with death or decimation as they try to take over my tiny backyard. But in the fall, I praise them again, as the fruit does double duty as beautiful decorations and amazing pie.

I really want to try Brussels Sprouts one of these years, but I always forget to get them started around mid-summer. I also really like kale in the fall. Once the weather gets a bit colder, the kale gets nice and sweet!

I love your blog. I read it daily but don’t comment too much. My spring and summer garden didn’t do well because of the drought. I watered at the begining but it wasn’t cost effecient after the third month with no rain. Did get some tomatoes and a very few peppers but it was disappointing.
Would love to be enetered into the giveaway contest. Surely I will have better luck with the fall gardening. We are starting to get rain now. Thanks.

While I’ve never had the space to grow them until this year, I love pumpkins! They have so many great purposes, both culinary and decorative. One of my favorite things to do when I was a kid was go to a pumpkin farm in the fall. Next year, I’m excited to have a pumpkin patch of my own!

Thank you so very much for sharing with us! I am excited to check this company out as we are looking at cover crops to help enrich our soil (new garden with very high clay content) and they are organic!!

Favorite fall crop…. swiss chard, carrots, beets, & radishes! In Alaska we grew “fall” crops all summer long and I didn’t realize how much I love them until we moved to Indiana. The cool days and nights really do make such a difference in the quality!!

Thank you so very much for hosting this giveaway!!

I would love to add the fall mix to my garden. I enjoy teaching my little girls the excitability that gardening and canning brings me. I see in there faces that they get excited too! I recently watched Food, Inc documentary. It made me rethink what I was already thinking. This just goes to show why 2012 was my year for change.

I’m fond of Brussels sprouts, and may pickle them with oregano again this year, but if I had to choose just one fall vegetable I’d go with butternut squash (technically a fruit, but no matter). Roasted and then used to make a thick sauce with onions and parmesan with whole-wheat penne, it’s hearty and wonderful.
