Frost Kissed Seed Tin Giveaway
Yesterday, we arrived home and found a package on the doorstep from Peaceful Valley Farm Supply. Of course that made me giddy, as packages of seeds and garden goodies always do! I’m very familiar with this company, because my parents have been ordering from them since I was a little girl. Back in the day, they were one of the few places to find organic gardening supplies.
Inside my package I found a big bag of Soil Builder Cover Crop with an envelope of inoculant. Being a huge fan of various cover crops and the wonderful benefits they provide, I’m really looking forward to trying this out!
I also received a collection of various seeds that I will experiment with planting this fall and winter. Which seeds arrived? ‘Little Finger’ carrots, ‘Flame’ lettuce, ‘Bloomsdale’ spinach, ‘Pink Beauty’ radish, ‘French Breakfast’ radish, ‘Sparkler’ radish, Mesclun mix, Braising greens mix, arugula, ‘Tres Fine’ endive, ‘Freckles’ lettuce, and ‘Black Seeded Simpson’ lettuce.
Along with all of the wonderful cold tolerant vegetables above, I also received the Frost Kissed Spring or Fall Mix Seed Tin. I plan on planting some of these this fall in a low tunnel to see how they do. The remaining seeds will be planted early next spring.
In order to kick start you fall garden, Peaceful Valley is going to be giving away a Frost Kissed Seed Tin to one lucky reader. All you have to do is comment on this post. Winner will be chosen September 12. Winner chosen, thanks to Random.org Joy Giles won. She said “Looks like a small Farmers’ Market to be in a tin. Would love to plant test garden with these.”
What’s your favorite fall/winter vegetable?

Even though Kale is usable during the summer, it is a favorite after a couple of good frosts. I’m very fond of winter squashes too. They just seem “right” as the days shorten and the leaves fall.

I love all the squashes! I can pick one. Roasted with a drizzle of maple syrup in the oven…heaven!

Love all the fall crops, and especially love Peaceful Valley. I love their cover crops and I order from them every year.

Pumpkins all the way! All summer long I threaten the plants with death or decimation as they try to take over my tiny backyard. But in the fall, I praise them again, as the fruit does double duty as beautiful decorations and amazing pie.

I would love to have the fall garden collection–especially since I am running a garden club at my school this year and we need some seeds to plant!

Winter carrots- stupid auto correct!

My favorite fall vegetable would have to be any of the greens, so versatile to use in cooking and smoothies and juices.
to Lisa's comment
I really want to try Brussels Sprouts one of these years, but I always forget to get them started around mid-summer. I also really like kale in the fall. Once the weather gets a bit colder, the kale gets nice and sweet!

I would LOVE to receive that tin! :) My fav winter veggie is broccoli.

My favorite fall vagetables to grow are pak choi and little Japanese turnips. I find the Asian veggies grow sooo much better during the fall than during the spring.I would love to experiment with the seeds in the tin!

I love braising greens, especially mustards. That’s looks like great collection. I LOVE the tin! I have visited this website, but have not tried anything out. It looks like they have lots of wonderful things.

I just started my fall lettuce and cabbage last week. =) Lettuce is my favorite cool-weather crop, but I include Swiss Chard and Spinach in the “lettuce” catagory.
to Karen's comment
Carrots and radishes…we love those the best. Maybe because they are so easy to grow?

The tin is very cute and the seeds look great! Trying to plan my first winter garden here in Cleveland and this would help out.

Butternut squash is my all-time favorite. I love it roasted, simmered in soups, and pan-sauteed with a little tomato sauce on top. I can’t go wrong with butternut (or pretty much any winter squash).
to Heather's comment
I am only just getting started with fall/winter gardening, so I guess I don’t really have a favorite yet. I am excited to try, though!
to Beth's comment
This would help me get started this fall! I am looking forward to growing spinac h. My husband eats a lot of it and I am loving the idea of having it fresh through the winter!
to angie h's comment
By the time fall lettuce is ready, I’m ready again to eat it. Spring and early Summer means I wear myself out eating it, but by the time Fall hits, I’m ready again.

acorn squash – hands down!

I like the packaging. We finally got the rain that makes planting more seeds seem reasonable. Thanks for the opportunity.

It’s hard for me to pick a favorite, but I think I’d have to go with leeks.

Another great giveaway! Like you I’m always excited about new seeds.

I enjoy reading your blog very much and have wanted to do a winter garden but have never done it. This would be great encouragement to just do it.

I am a huge fan of brussels sprouts and squash. My kids might like the brussels sprouts more than I do!

I’ve loved spinach since childhood and it’s still one of my favorites!
to Monica's comment
I enjoy growing beets in the fall.
to BeccaOH's comment
I love your blog. I read it daily but don’t comment too much. My spring and summer garden didn’t do well because of the drought. I watered at the begining but it wasn’t cost effecient after the third month with no rain. Did get some tomatoes and a very few peppers but it was disappointing.
Would love to be enetered into the giveaway contest. Surely I will have better luck with the fall gardening. We are starting to get rain now. Thanks.

While I’ve never had the space to grow them until this year, I love pumpkins! They have so many great purposes, both culinary and decorative. One of my favorite things to do when I was a kid was go to a pumpkin farm in the fall. Next year, I’m excited to have a pumpkin patch of my own!

Sept 12th is my birthday! I’d love to win these lovely seeds. What a great gift that would be!

Thank you so very much for sharing with us! I am excited to check this company out as we are looking at cover crops to help enrich our soil (new garden with very high clay content) and they are organic!!
Favorite fall crop…. swiss chard, carrots, beets, & radishes! In Alaska we grew “fall” crops all summer long and I didn’t realize how much I love them until we moved to Indiana. The cool days and nights really do make such a difference in the quality!!
Thank you so very much for hosting this giveaway!!

I would love to add the fall mix to my garden. I enjoy teaching my little girls the excitability that gardening and canning brings me. I see in there faces that they get excited too! I recently watched Food, Inc documentary. It made me rethink what I was already thinking. This just goes to show why 2012 was my year for change.
to Vicki's comment
In the fall, I love planting all the veggies that are supposed to be spring crops, like peas, radishes, broccoli, kale, and arugula. They seem to all do much better in the fall than in spring here in my Pennsylvania garden.
to Estelle's comment
Swiss chard is my favorite.
to Ms. Tweetley's comment
I’m fond of Brussels sprouts, and may pickle them with oregano again this year, but if I had to choose just one fall vegetable I’d go with butternut squash (technically a fruit, but no matter). Roasted and then used to make a thick sauce with onions and parmesan with whole-wheat penne, it’s hearty and wonderful.
to Karla's comment
I love the winter squash. So versatile, for pies, soups, casseroles or roasted as a lovely side by themselves.
to Gayle's comment
I think pumpkin has to be my favorite…so many things you can do with them!

What a great giveaway! I’m a sucker for zucchini, but wanting to plant so badly…as soon as we move! Thanks for the opportunity!
