Frost Kissed Seed Tin Giveaway

September 6th, 2012

Yesterday, we arrived home and found a package on the doorstep from Peaceful Valley Farm Supply. Of course that made me giddy, as packages of seeds and garden goodies always do! I’m very familiar with this company, because my parents have been ordering from them since I was a little girl. Back in the day, they were one of the few places to find organic gardening supplies.

Inside my package I found a big bag of Soil Builder Cover Crop with an envelope of inoculant. Being a huge fan of various cover crops and the wonderful benefits they provide, I’m really looking forward to trying this out!

I also received a collection of various seeds that I will experiment with planting this fall and winter. Which seeds arrived? ‘Little Finger’ carrots, ‘Flame’ lettuce, ‘Bloomsdale’ spinach, ‘Pink Beauty’ radish, ‘French Breakfast’ radish, ‘Sparkler’ radish, Mesclun mix, Braising greens mix, arugula, ‘Tres Fine’ endive, ‘Freckles’ lettuce, and ‘Black Seeded Simpson’ lettuce.

Along with all of the wonderful cold tolerant vegetables above, I also received the Frost Kissed Spring or Fall Mix Seed Tin. I plan on planting some of these this fall in a low tunnel to see how they do. The remaining seeds will be planted early next spring.

In order to kick start you fall garden, Peaceful Valley is going to be giving away a Frost Kissed Seed Tin to one lucky reader. All you have to do is comment on this post. Winner will be chosen September 12. Winner chosen, thanks to Random.org Joy Giles won. She said “Looks like a small Farmers’ Market to be in a tin. Would love to plant test garden with these.”

What’s your favorite fall/winter vegetable?

This will be the first year I will have a Fall garden (well that is if I ever get some seeds in the ground), but I am looking forward to having spinach again. It gets so hot so quickly here in the Spring we never have a chance to get much of a harvest before it bolts.

I ventured into seed starting this year without much luck. I want to get into seed starting more this next year so this would be perfect for that. Thank you.

I would love to try out any of these seeds! I live in Florida, so my only real growing seasons are Fall and Winter, and our cooler weather doesn’t start until November. The reversed seasons present a challenge sometimes.

This will be my first year of trying a year-round garden and I’m anxious to give an assortment of winter goodies a try. Karla’s idea to pickle Brussels sprouts sounds amazing! I may have to try that.

I ordered my “mini orchard” from them when we bought the house. They have some of the best prices anywhere on bare-rooted fruit trees and very reasonable shipping deals. They also have a fantastic video archive on their website with how-to gardening videos. I’ve learned a lot just watching those videos.

Such a cute tin, what a fun gift idea! Favorite would be butternut squash and then carrots. I love to harvest carrots thru the winter. I accidently overwintered some my first garden year and they were still great for soups and stews.

In our place, not too far away from where you are moving, winter crop is hard to grow even with Eliot Coleman’s wonderful quickhoop low tunnel which I do use. Only vegetable that have repeatedly overwinter successfully, aside from hardy herbs like chives and sage, are bunching green onions and Norabona. You provably have never hard of Norabona. It is Brassica rapa leafy green vegetable from Japan closely related to kale. You can eat leaves of this green vegetable just like kale, but what makes this vegetable wonderful is upon successful overwintering, it send out numerous edible flower-lets just like broccoli in early spring when there is no other greens are around.

My favorite fall veggie to grow is brocolli. It has a much sweeter taste and the cabbage worms are not much of a problem. We have already been harvesting it in December if it doesn’t get too cold. (It’s not covered or hooped.) I am also working with a fall crop of peas. The biggest problem is keeping the deer out of them. As the fall and winter approach they get more aggressive with what they eat in my garden.
The tin is adorable and the seeds would definitely be well appreciated.

I love your blog and it’s one of the only ones of the many that I subscribe to that I always make a point of reading. I should only win this if you think I can effectively grow these in my Southern California garden. I am preparing a huge fall bed though, so maybe!

I love any fresh garden veggies grown in the winter – it’s such a pleasure to have them, and it’s a big goal of mine to finally get some beds protected enough to weather the entire winter. I think my favorite may just be lettuce or spinach – it’s great to have a wonderful fresh green salad in the midst of a snowstorm.

I love the idea of fall gardening but living in Northern Canada, I am hesitant to even try. The first frost for us comes in late September. I might give some of the asian greens such as bok choy a try next year though. Seeds are nowhere to be found at this time of year.
