Tiny Trailer Travels Part Two

September 3rd, 2011

After driving for many hours for 4 days, we arrived in Seattle on Saturday morning to meet some friends who flew out on Friday. We rented a house because it’s cheaper and more comfortable than staying in a hotel.

We spent the next week in Seattle seeing the sights. We visiting the Museum of Flight, took the ferry to Bainbridge Island, we went up on the Space Needle during the day and at night, rode the monorail, and of course we spent a few hours at Pike’s Place market.

We also took the time to travel to Mt Rainier and Olympic National park so we could stamp those in our National Park Passport.

And what vacation is complete without a visit to a few gardens? We were able to see Bloedel Reserve and Kubota Gardens while in Seattle (more on these two gardens later).

After a week in Seattle our friends caught a plane back to Ohio and Mr Chiots hitched up the camper and headed down into Oregon.

What kinds of sights do you like to see when you go to a big city on vacation?

I’ll be uploaded more images from our travels over the next week or so, so check my Flickr Photostream for more photos of each part of the trip.

Tiny Trailer Travels Part One

September 2nd, 2011

A big thanks to all of you who joined in for the Alphabet in August. You may wonder why I did this during the height of gardening season. I needed a way to be able to blog every day while we were gone on our trip across the country. Mr Chiots and I hitched up our tiny camper that we built, packed up the car, and set out across the country. We had planned to leave on Monday, but postponed our trip for a variety of reasons. After packing and finishing a few things on the camper, we were on the road at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, August 9th.

We drove for many hours, passing through Chicago at dusk. We kept driving until around midnight and stopped for a few hours sleep somewhere in Wisconsin.

The next morning we were up early and on the road again making our way to our first official stop, Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We arrived late that night and were lucky enough to get the last camp sight left in the park. We woke up in the morning to a lovely view.

We met a family from Canada who had restored this lovely camper many years ago. She came over to chat with us about our little camper. This would be a theme throughout our travels, people were constantly asking us about our camper.

We left our trailer at the campground and set off to the drive the loop around the park. Since it was early, we spotted tons of wildlife including buffalo, wild horses, prairie dogs, birds and a huge elk standing majestically on a hillside.

After picking up our camper on the way out of the park, we headed off toward Glacier National Park. It was LONG drive across Montana, there was construction on every road we traveled making our progress very slow. Many sections of the highway we were traveling were stripped down to gravel and dirt, our car and camper were encrusted with dirt after the many miles we drove that day.

When we finally reached Glacier National Park it was after midnight. The moon was bright that night, so we were lucky to see the outlines of the mountains as we drove to our campground on the outskirts of the park. The next morning, we woke up early, crawled out of the camper and were greeted with the mountains looming overhead.

We spent the morning driving through Glacier National Park, which took quite a while because of construction on the roadway. Since there was construction and lots of traffic, we didn’t stop much. Most of the road was one lane and getting out of your car was not allowed. I snapped most of the photos of the park from the car as we traveled along. We’ll be scheduling a return trip someday when the construction is finished so we can spend a little more time viewing the sights.

Then we headed off into the sunset once again with goals of reaching Seattle the next day before noon.

Check back tomorrow for part II of the Tiny Trailer Travels. I’ll be uploaded more images from our travels over the next week or so, so check my Flickr Photostream for more photos of each part of the trip.

Are you a road trip person or do you prefer flying & staying in one place?

Lazy Day

September 1st, 2011

Today I’m just feeling too lazy to write a blog post. Well at least a blog post with any meat. I wouldn’t leave you without something to read or look at today so here are the two outdoor cats enjoying a lazy afternoon on the front porch.

We don’t have proper porch furniture yet, so I put our folding camping chairs out there for a place to sit and read or to enjoy my morning coffee. Reading on the front porch is my favorite way to spend my time when I’m feeling a little lazy.

The cats, of course, think we put them there for them and spend a lot of their time sleeping away the day in them.

What’s your favorite thing to do on a lazy day?

Z is for ____________

August 31st, 2011

ZUCCHINI LOVER – I love summer because it’s zucchini season. We eat it almost every day when I can find it locally or grow it. I put it in soups, saute it, and stuff it in to omelets.

ZIPPERS – You’ll rarely find me wearing something with long sleeves that doesn’t have a zipper in it. For some reason I prefer it if my sweaters and sweatshirts have zippers up the front and hoods on the back.

ZEALOUS – When I discover something new, or get convicted about something I become very zealous about it. That’s why you won’t find any prepackaged food in my pantry, my gardens are mostly edible and you’ll find me shopping only at local markets.

What words/phrases describe you that start with a Z?

Y is for ____________

August 30th, 2011

YOUNG – not as young as I used to be, but I’m still fairly young in my adulthood. I work hard to be healthy so I can keep some of my youthful exuberance into my old age.

YEARNING – I seem to always have a yearning to learn more, do more and experience more. I’m not happy to sit around doing nothing, if I have a spare moment you’ll find me working towards the newest thing I’ve been yearning to learn or researching a place I long to visit.

YUCCA LOVER – I grew up in South America so I learned to loved to love yucca early on. I don’t get it much since it’s not a local item, when I get up to Cleveland I usually buy some to enjoy. I usually cook it in chicken broth , but it’s quite good fried like french fries as well.

What words/phrases describe you that start with a Y?
